It's kind of a hard question to answer... a rebuilt transmission is better than a worn out original one. Hopefully they had the work done at a good shop and it wasn't the shadetree ******* tune up type. If they have receipts thats a plus. A good test drive will give you a good indication. Listen for weird noises coming from under the floorboard area, make sure it doesn't pop out of any of the gears and I would check to make sure that the clutch isn't slipping (In second gear, slow down and let the engine just push the Jeep along at idle then floor the gas pedal. If the engine RPM's rev high and then the Jeep's speed starts to climb, the clutch is worn out. If the engine starts to shudder as if it is struggling and the Jeep slowly accelerates, the clutch is good.). I would also make sure the the transfer case works in each drive.

Good luck.

Thank you guys! Hearing that these jeeps always break down though is making me a little scared! I'm wondering if I should just fly out there because that way I'll get to actually see it. I just love love the mounted windshield wipers! So fetch lol. Maybe I should just look into newer 2.5L models for greater reliable security? But yes! Rust is icky and I'd rather buy a California wrangler than one elsewhere. Should I just skip out on this one guys since I'm hearing so many break down stories with this year wrangler?

My advice when buying a used vehicle, especially one that's almost 20 years old:

You MUST take it to a mechanic. Definitely don't let them pick the mechanic either. Finding a referral for a good mechanic might be hard to do, may want to take it to their local Jeep dealer and have them look at it. Any vehicle that old will likely need some work.

I like to watch People's Court. Everyone that buys a used lemon gets yelled at by the judge: 'WHY DIDN'T YOU TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC!!!' :banghead:

I agree with the above: a rebuilt tranny is better than a worn out one that hasn't been rebuilt. If they did it right, that's another story.

I found my wrangler on Craigslist for a great price. My advice would be avoid lots like "Joe's Pre Owned Vehicles" type places. I bought mine from a Ford dealership BUT it WAS a Ford dealer. In this case name brand means something. Also mine is the 2.5 and though the mileage is stellar it's gutless as hell. You might want to consider a six cylinder over a four. Best of luck to you :)

Wow! Serious? ( oh joy) Like i would've never even guessed! Seemed like a pretty jeep to me hehe. Well I actually found something else, something better and more reliable so.. What do you think of this. A Nissan dealership is selling this 2006 2.5L Wrangler. It seems great and for the price?! Wow, my older brother is an amazing at negotiating. Sorry for the link being superrrr long!

Wow I'd jump all over that. Less than 12 grand for 60,000 miles seems like a no brainer. I got mine for 8,000 at 97,000 miles. Plus it's the six. Trade ya engines? Lol :)
