I have the dredded whistle in my 2000 tj 4.0. Mechanic said its a manifold gasket leak and its $495 to replace the intake manifold gasket. That's a little steep for me right now. Anybody ever sealed a manifold gasket leak tempoarily with a silicone or other type product from a tube? How'd it wirk out?

No I haven't, but I'd assume it would work exactly as well as you think its going to..... not at all.

The intake doesn't look too hard to remove on the 4.0 and just buying the gasket is going to save you truck loads of money. I can't see anything up top that would require anything more than basic hand tools to remove.

It will make a mess and the then when you do get it fixed it will cost that much more for the mechanic to clean up the goopy mess.

Depending on your mechanical ability's,corrosion,and tools you got it could be a pain in the ass.No quick fix here if you let it go to long it could compound to a cracked useless manifold and possibly a burnt valve.

Pulling & replacing the intake manifold with a new gasket is not that hard of a job. If you have a basic set of hand tools, you can do it. The only thing you have to take extra care on is to get the intake manifold properly positioned over a couple small positioning studs on the head so it can form an airtight seal.

before you do anything, make sure it is actually the intake manifold. With the Jeep running, spray carb cleaner around the intake ports at the head. If the idle changes, then yes it is leaking. You can also try re-torquing the intake manifold bolts and see if the help. Heating and cooling over time will cause those bolts to loosen. You may be able to re-torque and fix the problem.

Most important thing here is torque them CORRECTLY. That means the proper amount of torque and in the proper sequence. You should find these two things through a google search. Further, I would loosen all the bolts first, and then torque.

Worst case scenario, you have to unbolt the intake, slide it away from the head, scrape away the old gasket, fine grit sand paper to clean the two mating surfaces, then slide in the new gasket and reinstall. If you go this route, buy a Felpro gasket and get new intake manifold bolts.

If you can find the leak, save yourself time and money... buy a tub of SuperGlue and seal it. You might have to RE-seal it down the road but at least it won't cost you $500 bucks.

I've done this myself already. Replacing the gasket isn't a huge deal, it's just a process. It's more intimidating looking at it than anything. Unhook/unbolt whatever you need to so the manifolds can be pulled away from the head, clean the surfaces as needed, and reverse process with new gasket. Torque the bolts/nuts properly the first time. Don't just crank them down. If you crank them down, and then recheck them after some heat cycling and maybe crank on them yet again you may find yourself with another leak, or stripped threads to deal with next time around...

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but those intake and exhaust manifold bolts like to bust like the national debt. When I had my exhaust manifold replaced I just paid a buddy I know who owns a shop about four hundo to replace the damn thing. He spent half a day drilling out busted bolts from my cylinder head. I think it's best to leave that to people who are used to drilling out busted bolts all day. Saves you the aggravation.

Do just find the sequence for your manifold and tighten down and I would guess it's probably the ones closer to the firewall Just makes you talk him right with the right specs in the right order and if you can't find it all go from the centre out in my God people.... superglue... really... Please don't use superglue I Emplor you. Worst case scenario you got to snatch the thing off take it off change the gasket I don't think you need that you just need to tighten down best of luck...all your hopes and dreams..

It's a perfect weekend project!
If you have any mechanical ability.. which owning a TJ you're gonna need some lol.. give it a try, also, may be a good time to replace your exhaust manifold if its leaking like many do.
