Hi Julie,
thank you!! I actually got my Wrangler back today after two weeks, they needed to replace the torque converter. So the dealership ended up replacing the transmission as well
Thanks for following up on this, paulyg1683. I am glad to hear that the dealership was able to get everything addressed for you. Please do feel free to send us a PM in the further if you need any assistance.

Hi @sheepythejku, thanks for tagging us.
@ARPoole, if you are still experiencing the stalling concern, you are welcome to bring it to another dealer for a second opinion, and we can have a case escalated at that time.

Update to my situation. I took it in on 12/31 and the dealership said there was and update for the PCM software. They updated it and said it should work. I got it back and several days later it did it again. Took it back to the dealership on 02/01. I mentioned again the torque converter deal. They had it for a week and it wouldn’t duplicate it. They wanted to try my spare key thinking it wasn’t reading the key right? I took it to them and picked it up on 02/08. When I went to leave work (I work 12 hour shifts), it died on 02/09 and 02/10. I took a video both times and emailed the service manager. He asked me to bring it back up there. It seems like Jeep would send out some kind of service bulliten since this appears to be a common issue. Guess I’ll be stuck driving another loaner for a while.

My 2012 JKU Rubicon has been experiencing this for about 6 months. Bought it brand new in 2011 and now out of warranty only 67k miles on her. My local dealer and mechanic could not resolve the issue since its not showing a code.

I just recently posted my issues in a separate thread a few days ago: https://www.wranglerforum.com/f202/2012-jku-rubi-5-speed-auto-w5a580-issues-2359659.html

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Hello georgealva,

Thanks for reaching out. We can't necessarily provide any technical advice as we're not trained technicians. Are you thinking you'd like to get a second opinion? Send us a direct message and I'll escalate a case for further handling if so.

I love this forum because it reassures me I didn't buy a lemon... Just a Wrangler JK. I just started having this problem last week. It seems to happen only after the Jeep has been sitting for an extended period (overnight or after work), and it didn't really become a thing until the temperature dropped (30s-40s at night). I realize the temp thing is probably just coincidence. I think I still have the dealer warranty for another month or so, so I was going to call Monday. Can I notify the JeepCares people after I make an appointment so that I can hopefully avoid all of the issues other people seem to be having with dealers playing ignorant over and over?

Just out of bumper to bumper - intermittent - I do have the MOPAR MaxCare warranty w/unlimited miles and $100 deductible.

I am struggling documenting this / getting to dealer where they can replicate it. It happened 4x in 1 week then I made an appointment - then for next 2 week (I was out of town) nothing - nada - never happened. I cancelled my appt as I was unable to videotape it happening and I did not want to waste their or my time.

Today - boom - placing Jeep in reverse and the engine just shut off. No lights, no codes, nothing. I had to restart and when I did it actually struggled a bit to start up - then fine all day. No additional issues after the 1st start of the day.

Frustrated. AND I just bought my wife a 2019 JL (and Jeep no longer offers the MaxCare unlimited mileage warranty) Dang it.

Phantomvirus, let us know how your visit goes.

My visit to my dealer was not so let’s say eventful. When working with the service agent I shared the video and the response was “never saw that before”. I mentioned that I was doing some research and came across this thread and it had no weight.

The next morning I got a call from the dealer and they said they could not reproduce the issue, they did not see any codes lights etc... I explained again that I had taken a video, read this thread and seems quite a few people are experiencing this, response, “never saw this before”. Well I said keep it over the holiday and try again on the 2nd. We shall see today.

Meanwhile, I received a call from Jeep Cares, they reached out to the dealer and told me that the dealer could not reproduce the issue. I had referenced this thread and explained to the analyst that I had a video, the response was that it was not an issue he was familiar with.

My expectation was that Jeep Cares would advocate for my problem with the dealer, not just document and follow the case. @JeepCares, Am I incorrect?

Hi wipple370,
As customer care agents, we do rely on dealer diagnosis. Your case manager will relay your concern to the dealer and ensure it is looked into, however, often times, the dealer does need to be able to replicate your concern in order to identify the proper repair procedure. Your case is still opened and per the notes your dealer is attempting to replicate your concern.

I recently purchased a 2013 JK with 106K miles on it which seems to be having the same issue of stalling when put into reverse on a cold start (first of the day). I dropped it off at my local dealer on 1/6. I explained in great detail what has been happening, offered up my video of the issue which they declined to see and mentioned this thread. They ran some diagnostics and told me they don't see any issue. I explained to them again in detail what I'm experiencing. They kept it over night to see if they can reproduce the issue and possibly capture some diagnostic data. Still waiting to hear back.
As mentioned to your fellow forum members, please keep us updated on your dealer visit. If additional support is needed, feel free to send us a PM.

Two questions to add here - does the torque converter issue effect the battery? Long story short I had the same issue and had to tow it to the nearest dealership (my least fav in the city, btw) where they charged me an arm and a leg for a new battery and pretty much did nothing else. They said they ran diagnostics but had no record of it to share with me.
Anyway, poor Beast Boy has died 4 more times since at random, same issue as everyone else here, and it’s not just on the coldest days.
Question two, how do I get in touch with Jeep Cares? From some of your experiences it sounds like I’m going to have to pay for diagnostics and get the run around bc the chances they can replicate it while it’s there are slim to none. I have a lifetime warranty so the torque converter should be covered, right? But only if they can diagnosis it...I definitely need someone with expertise to help out!
Thanks, everyone. I always forget how helpful and awesome this forum is!

I can add to this. I have a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Sport S Unlimited. I have 45,000 miles. Since November, randomly, when I start the Jeep in mornings and put it into reverse it will stall. When I put it back in park and restart the Jeep it will then go into reverse just fine. If I start the vehicle and go straight to Drive and then into reverse it doesn't stall. This, stalling, seems to only happen to me once or twice a month. If it doesn't stall on me then it randomly idles down low and sputters before it goes to normal Idle.

My Jeep is currently at the dealership for the third time pertaining to this issue. Every time it stalls I take it there for documentation. Each time the dealership keeps it for 3 days to start each morning and each time they tell me they can't replicate the problem and there are no codes. I had Chrysler open a case last time and all they do is call dealership and they tell them they can't replicate the problem. Chrysler then calls me back and says they closed the case because the dealership can't replicate the issue. I kept records of each time it happened. Here are my records:

10/18/19, 9:30am, 30-40 degrees: stalled in reverse and it is first start up of the day
10/19/19, 11:12am, 30-40 degrees: stalled in reverse and it is first start up of the day
11/10/19, 11:30am, 52 degrees: stalled in reverse and it is first start up of the day
02/08/19, 5:45pm, 41 degrees: stalled in reverse and it is first start up of the day. Also, when restarted from park and put back into reverse the vehicle wouldn't move but stayed it did stay idling. Shifted to drive then back into reverse and it engaged with no issues.
Hi Je17ep,
As a fresh set of eyes on your situation, I certainly regret hearing this.

Did your dealer ever figure this out, or did you ever figure this? I have the exact same issue with my 2016 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited with it dying when I put it in reverse at the start of the day, and I also have the same feeling that if I let off the brakes fast enough, that will prevent it from dying, but I generally can't do that because I am parked in a spot very close to my husband's truck and there's a close brick wall on other side. And it doesn't matter if I've warmed the engine up for several minutes, or if I accelerate with the gas pedal. Doesn't happen the rest of the day; just that first morning start. I'm kind of surprised to see someone else having literally the exact same description of what I'm having. Thanks for any help.

Kathryn, Issuing a technical bulletin should not be a great challenge for FCA since this issue has already been covered in a NAG1 transmission repair manual. See http://www.lx.abodiesonline.com/Manuals/NAG1 Manual.pdf at page 21-528 about half way down to the right of the symptom "Engine stalls when transmission is shifted into R or D." Thus it is clearly a known issue.

Please advise.

Hi hucklb,
I certainly understand the reason for your inquiry, however there is unfortunately no TSB released at this point. If you are currently experiencing this concern in your vehicle, we do recommend having your dealer diagnose your vehicle individually. I do apologize for the inconvenience, please know that our team is always happy to assist during your servicing appointment.

Well, they replaced my valve body in the transmission. Surprise Surprise, the Jeep still stalled. They now have a torque converter on order. Now my question is if they will warranty anything on the valve body if it fails when warranty is over? Same with torque converter?
I mentioned to my dealer about 30000 miles ago that my jeep stuttered in reverse and they said "no codes no options". Now with 1000 miles left on the
60,000 warranty, it has began dying at times when going into reverse. I was able to capture a rough idle on camera and I uploaded it onto Youtube. My local dealer has been ZERO help , so I am driving 35 miles to the next dealer. With each mile, I can feel my wallet beginning to sweat at the potential cost of repair. Jeep Cares is involved and she seems optimistic of resolving the issue. I will keep y'all updated. Volume up for the video https://youtu.be/BmGcAtncgBg
Taking my 2016 Sport in for stalling. Same exact symptoms as everyone else, been going on for a few months now. Hoping the dealer listens, but I’ll be reaching out to Jeep Cares if they don’t. Luckily, I jumped on the lifetime warranty when I bought it!
Good morning, I'm new the forum (just signed up today). We too are having the stalling/low RPM with our 16 JKUR and made and appointment for this afternoon. We shall see how it turns out. I told the service man when I called what the issue was and he responded with "that's odd". We have 58,000 miles on it so I'm hoping it'll be covered under the 60k 5 year warranty.
Hello everyone.
We are happy to see that this concern is being brought the the attention of our dealers. Feel free to keep our team updated on your diagnosis via private message, as we are happy to offer our additional support to your servicing visit.

UPDATE: After printing this whole thread and highlighting all issues and fixes in the thread , including dealers named that fixed the problem. I also printed the NAG1 transmission manual and highlighted the issue. I took those things to my local dealer 2 different trips, and they offered zero support stating they cant reproduce the issue. I even tried to schedule a 3rd visit, but couldnt get anyone to call me back from Royston Jeep, after multiple calls for an appointment. I then took the jeep to a dealer farther away. I showed them the same stuff and also the recorded video. JeepCares helped with a rental car and the dealer called me a few days later with a new torque converter. My suggestion....find the right service department. Justin Brown @ Rogersville Tennessee Jeep took care of me without any issues.

@Lowe516,
We are always happy to help! Glad to see that this was resolved.

My 2017 wrangler sport has been at the dealer twice for this same issue and they have told me “they could not recreate the issue”. Bringing it in next Wednesday for further testing according to them. Contacted JeepCares so hopefully everything transitions smoothly. 26,660 miles currently on the odometer. Will
