OK need some help here. Drove outa work about 100 yards then stopped at a stop sign. Then the jeep acted like it was in neutral. Switched through the gears with no luck. Then heard a grinding noise and played with the transfer case shifter and it started going again. Is this the transfer case going out or might need fluid? 93 4.0 auto. Any ideas would be appreciated

Could be something loose causing the shifter to get hit and move. That or +1 on the linkage.

If it slips between 2wd and 4-hi it can be in "neutral", and the grindin noise you described would happen
That makes sense. I might have play in the linkage after all. Thanks for the help. I'll check it out after work
