I know this is a wrangler forum, but considering we all drive Jeeps...Does anybody know anything about the Jeep Liberty? A buddy of mine is looking at buying one, an 04 with 93,000 miles.... how do these things do on gas, are there any known problems associated with them, do they have the same driveline as the TJ? Are they solid axle or IFS? Any input would be great....Thanks in advance!

93k miles seem very high for an 04. MPG figure around 20 bit more with the non gas version. Check edmunds.com for better numbers. Front axle is IFS rear is solid. For a mini ute they do okay. Off-road, with a mild lift and a bigger tire they do okay too. Frankly If I where looking to get one I would look for a year or two older grand cherokee for about the same price. OR if wanted to save a ton of coin, get the last year XJ.

Yeah - he'd have better luck, and more fun, with a late model Xj Cherokee. They are plentiful and very reliable. My family owns 3, all withover 100K miles, the newest being a '99 with about 130k. Trust me, he'd like an Xj over the Liberty.
friends don't let friends drive libertys...:D

Their alright, but for an 04, that has alot of miles on it for only being driven close to three years..... My 13 year old YJ has only 46k on it now...

Don't mind me asking, but how much is it going for? with all that millage and all...
Yeah I would have to know what they are asking to see if this is worth it. But if they are going by blue book, I would pass on it. Go with the XJ, or something else entirely. Why does he WANT the Liberty? That would have a lot to do with whether it is a good deal to HIM or not. But 93K miles on a V6, not the i-6, is a lot of miles.

No, I do not believe that they are solid axles and they use Command Trac like the XJs.
First off don't lie you know you want it....j\k. But seriously I would not buy a gas vehicle with that many miles thats just askin for trouble. Maybe the Libby with the CRD or something but you honestly should try to talk him out of it. Tell him at least to get a WJ they are relatively cheap and nice. Stay away from 05 and up WK's they suck, we have one.
I kinda like the liberties, for what it was designed for I think they did a good job. It's no off roading rig, but for a road warrior I'm a fan. Its comfortable I like the way it fits. they went with the IFS to teach it some road manners but kept the rear in gear with the solid axle. the engine is the same as the V8 in the Grand Cherokee just missing 2 cylinders, and its got a decient tow rating for a crossover SUV at 5K lbs. The only thing that holds me up is the mileage and not knowing the price.
Actually the little libby's are pretty damn capable of road we drove the limited that my wife almost bought and it went everywhere my Wrangler went when it was stock.
Yeah, they were asking 9 grand, and he just wanted a rig with 4 weeldrive and some decent on/offroad manners.... I talked him out of the liberty, he's looking at an XJ, a blazer and a Jimmy now....trying to get him to go Jeep! Sorry about posting this in TJ talk, wasn't paying attention.... thanks for all the info and opinions, they were valuable!
I just met a guy the other day up here with a '01 XJ with 4.0L Auto and 78K on it, wanted $8500... just to give you some thought :D
