So the other day I took the Jeep out in a little mud and now it sounds like(revs like) it's stuck in 4H but the RPM's are normal for 2WD. I've engaged the lever with the light successfully coming on and off.(could the Jeep still be engaged in 4wd even though the light on the dash goes on and off?) The Jeep is whining at a fairly high pitch and I'm wondering if it could be the transmission. Gears all shift smoothly. All belts look fine as well.
Any ideas?

If you are driving on dry pavement and turn to either the left or right, you will immediately know if you are in 4 wheel or not. The binding will be obvious.

What type of wheeling did you do when you were out? If you were in mud, then there is a good chance you have it packed in around your wheels, brakes, rotors, etc.

Did you take it through any water?

Okay I feel no difference between 2wd and 4H when I turn even though the light on the dash goes on and off.

I pressure washed EVERYthing on the Jeep and spent over 30 minutes on the undercarriage alone.

I was in fairly deep mud AND water. Nothing snorkel depth or anything but over axle depth for sure. Would there be anything in the tranny? Or is that sealed up pretty tight?

Oh man. Water is very bad. You probably will want to change your fluid in your diffs. Water will warp your rotors if they were hot when you pulled off into the water. You can bet they were!

Anyway, did you do like I said? Try it on dry pavement and turn in either direction? You should feel a very distinnct difference.

I feel no diff when I turn between 2 and 4 and is changing the fluid in the diffs easy to do or should I have someone else do it?
