Ok so after completing my first Jeep resto I'm starting in on the finishing touches. I noticed that the only courtesy light was on the drivers side. I wired LED strips into the front and back and that worked out quite well - Open the door and the foot wells are flooded with nice ambient light. I plan on adding an "insta-trunk" type product in the near future and I would like to have a light that comes on when the rear gate is opened. I did a fair amount of google searching and used the search feature here - I found nothing that fit exactly what I'm looking for. If anyone has done this or has insight on how I can best complete the task please let me know.

I would tap into the dome light in the sound bar if you have one. Run the wires down the roll cage under the padding and just add a simple LED strip to the trunk. Then you can use the dome light switch on the column to turn the light on.

That's a good idea but I want something that comes on automatically like the courtesy lights do when I open the entry doors. I could put a manually switched light back there but I was going for something more factory in function.

You didn't mention what year your Jeep is, but at least on a 97-03, If you simply wanted a door switch on the tailgate to operate a cargo light, you could splice into the Pink/White wire in the sound bar (hot) and run it to your light. The second wire from your light would run through the switch, then ground to the body.

If you want the dome and the courtesy to come on with the cargo also (when you open the tailgate), do as above, but also splice in to the yellow wire in the sound bar and run it to the side of your new door switch that also has the lead from your new light.

If you want it to act like the courtesy and dome light and come on with the headlight switch as well as any door switches, then it's a different story. You would have to run three wires back from locations under the dash and would need the fsm to locate them.

I would just add a pin switch then and place it by the connections for the third brake light, so when it is closed it closes the circuit.

If you're adding a switch of some kind, I would consider a magnetic reed switch instead of a pin switch. A pin switch would have continuous wear as the gate swings closed, it would likely be at an angle, bending the pin as it gets pushed in. A magnetic reed switch won't have that excessive wear and should hold up a lot longer in this situation.

As mentioned above, you would want a Normally Open (N.O.) switch; it should be an open circuit when the gate is closed and then a closed circuit with the gate open.
