Hi Everyone,
I'm new to Jeeps but jumped right in with a 1989 Wrangler. i love this car (my first car).
I have what some have refereed to as a Govern problem. My car will go up to 70 mph in 4th gear but put it in 5th and it 55 mph max.
I need to know how to disconnect this device.
I have read a lot of great posts on this forum, thanks for sharing.

I have 33" tires. But why would that make a difference in 5th gear and not in 4th gear? In 4th i can go 70 +.

Unless you have had your speedometer calibrated

At 70 mph you are actually doing.... 83.4
At 55 mph you are actually doing.... 65.5

I would not drive my jeep at 83 mph...

But to answer your question... I have no idea why your "car" (we call them jeeps) will go 70 in 4th but only 55 in 5th.... unless you have a problem with something else... I've not heard about "governed" jeeps...
Clutch good? You should have enough motor...

I have not had my speedometer calibrated. I am going to have this checked, thanks.
My clutch is good.
when in 5th gear at 55 it hits a wall. i can have my foot all the way down on the peddle and it stays at 55 mph and the RPM doesn't change. But in 4th i can go faster than 55 mph.

I need to regear mine because I have 33's but even with a 4 banger I can easily do 70 "on flat ground of course"

Seems that gears wouldn't be the issue, if I was doing 70 in 5th and dropped it into 4th I would be lucky to hit 60 without blowing the engine

The last time my jeep saw 70 was when it was being delivered to the dealership on the back of a semi-truck....
I do use 5th regularly as an overdrive... 4th has more power hit's the magic spot... 5th is a dog.. but it does work and pulls.
I have the 2.5... 5-speed with 4:10's

When you shift into 5th how fast are you going? You may not have enough power to take it from 55 up to say 70. Try using 4th to get up to 70 then shift into overdrive. If that is what you have been doing and having this problem I apologize for misunderstanding

Good thinking, but it was actually the first thing i tried. I took it to 70 in fourth and then threw it into fifth. then it slowly went down to 55.

I have the same setup as you, 4.2 with a 4" lift and 33s, only it's a 90. I never use 5th gear. My speedometer shows 9 miles an hour slower than I'm actually going, so if it says 70, I'm actually doing 79. You don't need to calibrate your speedometer, if you have a smart phone, you can download a free app that uses gps to display your actual speed. I tested the app on my car first, then used it on my jeep.

I have the 4.2, with a 4 inch lift on 32's. I shift into 5th gear at any speed above 45 mph and have plenty of power and acceleration. If you can't get above 55 mph in 5th something is off. I couldn't use 5th gear either when I first got mine. I thought it was the "tires with original gears". A friend adjusted my carb and set my timing (it was way off). Jeep runs like a champ now in all gears, including 5th.

I can get mine to cruise at 70 in 5th with a 4.2l on 35's with stock gearing.

I have an 87 with a 4.2, stock gearing, a 4 inch lift and 32s, and I have the same problem. I can hit 70mph or higher IF I shift into 5th from 65mph and I'm going downhill. However, it's such a pain in the ass I usually just keep it in 4th on the highway and ride between 55 and 60mph. I try never to ride above 60mph in 4th unless I plan on moving into 5th. I also don't feel like it's safe to drive it over 65mph regardless.

No mention of what rearend ratio you are running but if you have the 3.07s 5th will be useless. I ran that for 10 years and never used 5th gear. Only way to make 5th gear useable is with a regear or smaller tires.
