A friend of mine bought a 08 that jk that has a 4" lift brand un nown. The jeep rides really rough and he is wanting to replace the shocks. What would you think would be the softest riding shock he could get. No serious offroad usage. Thanks
Pretty hard to provide a good answer when we don't know the lift. In addition a rough ride is not always a shock issue. Things like control arms also can lead to a rough ride. As the vehicle is lifted the angle of attack of the control arms becomes worse from a ride stand of view. Also the material the joints are made of make a difference.
The wrong spring can also be an issue. Springs ideally will support the lift height and at the same time provide good compression for the weight of the vehicle. If the spring is to stiff you will have a rough ride regardless of the shock you throw at it.
Ideally spring and shock should be matched to to the weight of the vehicle, it's intended use and the lift height. On the high end you could go with custom Kings but you need to know the lift height, spring rate and weight of the vehicle. On the low end you could try Rancho 9000XL's. That would give you some adjustability and maybe they would work.
It might not be a shock problem. My advice would be to take it into a reputable shop (that specializes in jeeps) and see what they recommend. Maybe get more than one opinion before you start replacing anything.
