Hi guys new to the forum here and this is my first jeep so im hoping you can point me in the right direction.

I just bought a used 89 wrangler and it has a spring over axle and shortened nose cones on the transfer. When bought it the speedo did'nt work so I picked up the parts to fix it and when I get under it it has a electrical connector coming from where the speed sensor should be.

Can anyone point me in the right way to get this fixed?

^great help.:flipoff:

got pics of the trans/tcase? couple possibilities, might have newer t case, or trans in it, w/ electronic speed sensor.

you might be able to convert it to mechanical, but i'd see what you have in there first. are you saying there's no speedo cable, just wires right?

The speedo cable is still connected to the speedometer and is still in place on the truck its just not connected to the transfer case. I'm not sure how to post pics on here otherwise I would. I know the the transfer is a NP231 and I know where to look for the speedo gear but like I said it looks like a SYE was installed and now it has an electronic connector coming from it.

Sounds to me like you need to get a speedometer from a newer YJ with the electric speedo and not the mechanical one and wire it up. The speed sensor should be 3 wires. As far as wiring that in I have no idea because all my schematics show all 3 wires going into the PCM.

Short of getting a Autometer programmable speedo, I don't know if it can be done without getting a new PCM thats setup for a electric speedo and not a mechanical one. Cuz that speedo is controlled by the PCM.

^yup, there's gotta be a mechanical speedo that will fit in there, and then just run the cable. that's gotta be out of a newer jeep.

try this, measure that hole in your t case, i have a stock t case at hom from 87, i can see if the hole is the same, then you could just get a sensor for your year maybe.

I'll measure tom. and see how big it is. It seems like a really short transfer nose cone. So if thats the case what am I going to need?

Sorry for the late reply f*cking work has been getting in the way of wrenching on my own stuff. I pulled the sensor to measure and it has this little magnetic sensor thing. I got no clue what this is but i really would like to put in a speedo soon. Cops keep giving me funny looks ( or it could be my guilty conscience).

They're just jealous of your jeep. If they pull you over it'll probably be for just a burnt bulb or something like that so they can check out your jeep. :punk:

i used to have a few buddies that were cops, they'd pull me over just to screw with me. the first few times freaked me out. funny thing is they were the biggest trouble makers in highschool, and they became cops.

Back to the problem..... Is there any electronic speedos that you guys would recommend. What about ease of installation? BTW I'm sure my 4 banger w/ 5 speed doesn't go much faster than 60-65 mph.
