Help!!! I have both original ignition keys (gray) that came with my 2006 Rubicon, one is like new, the other is so worn it will fall out of the ignition while driving down the road. I want to cut a couple of new keys but locksmiths want $75-$140 dollars to supply, cut and program each key. I can program them I just can't get a clear answer as to which key blank I need. I bought 2 blanks from Amazon for $16 had them cut (free) tried to program but they won't program. To program I inserted one factory key turned to the on position waited 5 or so seconds shut off removed that key inserted the second factory key turned to on position waited for the chime signifying program mode, turned off and removed key. Inserted new key turned to on but the skim light keeps flashing and key doesn't program. Can any one tell me for sure which blank I need to purchase. I really don't want to have to pay $75 for a key.

First if a key was already programmed in another skim system you cannot use it in another unlike other big 3 chipped key systems

Next a skim
Module has a limited number of keys to be programed if you or previous owner reached limit no more can be programmed

I am the second owner of this Jeep and as far as I know I have the only two keys programmed for it. The keys I was trying to program were new blanks I had cut from my good factory key so I'm pretty sure they were never programmed to another skim. The blanks I bought were Y164-pt blanks and through some research I think I need Y160-pt blanks but I was hoping someone knew for sure before I bought more blanks.

I just stay away from skim modules
Anything designed to disable the Jeep with no backup override is not something I want
Plus with just a non skim pcm swap and skim unplug it is defeated

Not an accident that police ordered all their crown Vic’s with no pass (chipped keys)

If the key is gray it does not require a programable chip key. When our grandson got his 2006 jeep wrangler there was only on key (black) which has a chip in it. We went to Home Depot to have new key made and they cut a new black key and programed it by their machine. It works great the first time. I thinks I paid like $6.00 for the black one. We also had them cut a gray to hide so.

I think you have it backwards, skim keys are gray and non chip keys are black. My Jeep is definitely skim equipped, I am sure of this because the new keys I had cut will start the Jeep but it shuts down about three seconds later which indicates the skim system does not recognize the key

If both of your keys were original they would say JEEP on them. My '03 had two keys when I bought it - both SKIM keys. One said JEEP which I am confident was an original key. The other had the Chrysler Pentastar logo on it. Both were so worn they were a very dark gray. When a friend got a new SKIM key cut and programmed at a local locksmith (only one in the county that does it) for $71, I had a new third key cut.

I also had previously purchased two gray head keys, had them cut, and tried to program them myself. I was also 0 for 2. A locksmith with the computer uses a totally different process. The locksmith wanted both my DL and registration. He first matched the name and address on both, then handed me back my DL. He took the registration over and made a phone call to get the code to make a key using the VIN. He then gave me back the registration and we went out to the Jeep. He plugged his computer into the OBDII port to do the programming. It actually took him two tries, but the key works. $71 for a key that works is better than $8 for one that doesn't.

It might be that you have one original and a "CLONE" of the original key.
Like stated in your owners manual, it sounds like you are following the correct procedure to program a third key (8 is max I think).

A CLONE is a direct copy of the first keys' ID and therefore looks just like the original key to the on-board computer, electronically.

Your system is looking for two separate (programmed i.e. different signature) keys to program the third key.

Why the hassle? This system prevents me from programming another key for myself if you were to loan me the vehicle. Only the rightful owner would likely have in possion,more than one key correctly logged in the system.

You can cut the toothed part off your worn key and ziptie the plastic part to the steering column....

Then any black non skim key can be cut and work fine...

I fell lucky to have missed out by one year! I just got three regular keys made at home Depot for $15.

Neither wife’s 04 rubi or my 98 had skim
It was optional starting 1999 or perhaps late 98 as covered in 98 FSM but not 98 owners manual

Both of my keys have the Jeep logo on them and the skim system will enter the programming mode, after some further research I found a PDF of key numbers and it looks like the Y164-pt key blanks I first purchased are for 2007 and up Wranglers. It shows that Y160-pt blanks fit my 2006. I found blanks from a key dealer online for $5.99 each, since I can have them cut for free from my one original key that is in perfect shape I am going to go this route. If I strike out again I may very well pursue Digger 84's suggestion to eliminate the skim system altogether. Thank you everyone for your input. I will update this thread after trying the new keys.

Keep in mind that if the system makes it hard for you to make a key, it makes it hard for a thief to make a key or hot wire the Jeep to steal it.

I agree and that is why I'm trying to keep the system in place. My proximity to our southern border makes me especially wary of doing anything that makes it easier to steal my Jeep.

Some will flame me for this but I am currently trying to add SKIM to my Jeep. Too many Jeeps being taken around my area. They have been busting the lock cylinder out of non-SKIM Jeeps and just driving off with them.


One option to get keys programmed that I dont think was mentioned here is taking it to the dealer and having them program a new key. Will be expensive but you'll have new keys.


Personally kill switches to me are very easy to bypass (or at least easier to bypass than the SKIM). To bypass the SKIM one needs to know the year of your Jeep and have a computer to swap in and if they forget to unplug the SKIM module then they have just bricked their computer. Sure it isn't bullet proof but it'll keep the opportunistic thief from taking the whole Jeep. Now if they have a tow truck you are just double screwed. Not to mention the factory SKIM module is the cleanest and doesn't require a fob or a ton of extra wiring and relays to make it work. It is already in your harness with one plug and a trip to someone who can program it.
