I'm going to be starting to replace my body mounts on my 94 yj over the weekend. The shop tried doing one of the bolts while it was there for inspection, but they decided to stop after they spun one of them. I started their pb-blaster/liquid wrench bath today with some light hammering as well. I figured this would be a good start.

I ready a bunch of posts already and some videos. I'm bracing myself for the worst.

It’s a pretty common occurrence with our Aging YJ’s, there are some tricks however.

1. Drill a holes no larger than a straw for penetrating oil in the tub above the mounts

2. If captive nuts are already spinning, try putting pressure above them in the tub, also leveraging bolts as you turn.

3. Use a hole saw to cut into tub above mounts to access nuts, fill hole with appropriately sized body plug.

4. Cut a U into tub above mounts, fold back metal, weld.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got the cutting tools already and have drilled the holes and soaked everything so far. if I have to replace the captive nuts, will some heavy duty washers and lock nuts work ok? Or should they be welded?

When I did my body lift I broke only one bolt (right rear, by the bumper).
I cut a 3 sided trap door and removed the nut plate. Then I locked it in my vice and heated it HOT. I was able to remove the broken portion of the bolt with Vice Grips (and a fair amount of penetrating oil). I then put it back and tack welded the sheet metal cage back in place and then welded the trap door shut. I used Anti-Seize when installing the new bolts that came with the body lift kit.

I installed a 2" body lift that I'll be replacing with a 1" kit in the future.

Good Luck, L.M.

3 bolts spun/snapped. One bolt turns but doesn't come off, but is not broke so I'm assuming stripped bolt. The rest came off OK. I'll get grade 8s tomorrow to replace them all. Not a fan of doing these
