Ok so ill start from the beginning. Last Wednesday I went to put my 2004 Jeep Wrangler (6 cyl automatic) into park and it would not go. I brought it to the garage down the road from my work and they said that they were about to close but if I could leave it over night they would look at it first thing in the morning. The next day they called me and they had been able to put it into all its gears manually (from underneath or something like that) so they knew it wasn't the transmission. So they told me it was the shifter its self and that the rod inside had broke. So they were going to order a new "mechanism" and a new shifter nob from a dealership. It was new years weekend so it took a few days i ended up getting it back yesterday (Monday). When i picked it up and went to drive away i noticed that when i went to put it into drive it was actually in neutral. I eventually figured it out and went home. On the way home i stopped at an empty parking lot and messed with it. The letters on the shifter dont match up with the actual gear its in. If it says its in drive "D" its actually in neutral "N" and so on... another note, the shifter doesnt go all the way down to first. theres not enough room. So I am wondering if its ok for now. I can figure out where to put the shifter to drive and park and put it in reverse and all that but I dont want it to mess up the jeep. I would bring it back but im a girl and I feel like they would try to take advantage of me. I dont like being in situations like that. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Happy new year

It's fine, all that's happened is that the mechanism insider the shifter plate has become unaligned. It's difficult to explain what it looks like, but it's basically a tab that it runs along. It happened in my Cougar and I never got it fixed. You won't do any damage to the shifter or to the transmission, so don't worry about driving it around.

My friend had this happen on his 91 K-5 blazer. The gears were all in the proper spot, but the indicator didn't line up. It was something like the length of a cable being off.

My first suggestion would be make sure you can get to all your gears. Put the shifter all the way up into park, then count the "clicks" back, P...R...N...D... However many numbers there are on the shifter. If you can get into the proper number of gears, then its ok unless your ocdish and need them to line up, you'll get used to it.

If you cant get into all of them I would take it back to the garage and tell them "I can no longer get the shifter into this position and the gear I am in does not correspond to what is shown on the shifter."

Something along those lines.

And Welcome!!! :wavey:

My jeep is currently stripped out so i figured id take a couple pictures to show you what everyone is talking about.

I circled the slot and tab that is used to align the numbers with the shifter. As everyone is saying this must be misaligned or broken.

The next picture shows what it should look like assembled

The clear tab should be in the metal slot. As everyone already said it wont affect your jeep. just looks like your in the wrong gear. Hope everyone helped and now they cant screw you over if you go back and make them re-do it.

If it bugs you i would take it back, they should fix it for free, seeing as how they were the ones that knocked it out of alignment. If it doesnt bug you, then leave it, it wont hurt anything. if you are afraid that they will take advantage of you, just have a mechanicly inclined friend come with you they are generally really quick to drop any B.S. they are trying to pull when they find out that you know what your talking about

Thank you everybody for your help. Thanks nelson08those pictures are extremely helpful. I feel better about this now. It looks like an easy fix. Is this something I could do on my own? Im pretty good at taking stuff apart and remembering how it goes back together.
