Okay, so I have done a LOT of reading all over this site, and I'm still wondering....what's the best lift kit for me?

I've got a '97 Sahara (that I am in love with) and want some clearance without having to lower the transfer case and worry about the driveline. I know this puts me in the 1-2.5" range...I think I want to go with a coil suspension lift instead of a BB but no one has given me a solid reason why NOT to go with a budget boost. I was looking at skyjackers, and its crazy the price difference when you go from their BB to a standard system lift...

Any input? :D

I've read High line fenders and or some major trimming could get you on 35s without any lift at all. That probably will require some bump stop extending and sacrificing of some flex but it would gain clearance while keeping low stable

My point is that could be a good starting point, then you could add slightly taller spring as you build without upsetting suspension geometry and driveline angles

Dont go skyjacker, i put a skyjacker 2.5 inch lift on my jeep when i got it and the shocks ride just as bad as the shocks that it came with and they were the original shocks from 1997. I would agree with the fender flare idea as a good alternative or investing a better chunk of change than a skyjacker will run you for a lift kit.

What size tires are you looking to run and how much $$$ do you want to spend?
I'm on 31's now and I'm fine with those, I just want more ground clearance

on a college budget, so I wasn't looking to go any higher than the $500-$600 range..

My point is that could be a good starting point, then you could add slightly taller spring as you build without upsetting suspension geometry and driveline angles
would the slightly taller springs give me more ground clearance?

Taller springs will only give more break over clearance or "belly clearance", bigger tires will give you better axle clearance, approach and departure. If better break over is what your after you could always go with a flatter aftermarket skid plate but it may require drive line modification, possibly a small body lift and or a 4wd lever linkage mod to compensate for the t-case being push up closer to the tub, I know you said you didn't want to mess with drivelines, however it would fit the budget nicely and add better protection vs stock skid plate.

that sounds fairly do-able...and a body lift rides the same as stock? I've been told to avoid body lifts and go with the coil spring suspension, but I can't seem to get a legitimate reason why

The BDS 2" coil spring lift is what I'm looking at to eventually put on my TJ. I'm in the same boat as you; I also run 31s and am happy with the size but want a little more belly clearance.

I forget the exact name of the site(I think it's 4x4groupbuy) but they had the BDS 2" coil lift with shocks for about 400, which I thought was very reasonable. Though I've never seen too many comments on their shocks, so I'm not 100% sold on them. I hear their lifts are very good budget-friendly items though, sometimes mentioned in the same breath as OME in terms of quality for the money.

I'm not trying to be rude by trying to steer you away from lifts, I realize you were originally asking about small lifts but I'm just pointing out that there are other and sometime better ways to achieve better than stock clearance. Even smaller lifts change suspension geometry and with that your jeep will handle and ride less like a stock jeep on the road. Just pointing out other options is all.

A lot of people say avoid body lift over 2 inch because the longer bolts have more leverage making the more likely to break. Many people say smaller body lifts are fine and often necessary for such mods.

A small body lift will not affect the suspension, technically speaking it will raise the center somewhat but not as much as a suspension lift will since the weight of the frame won't be raised

You could part it out all seperately, I got Energy Suspension Islolators and Sky Jacker body Lift and shocks??? Doesn't need to be one kit??Just a thought.

I've never haven't done a flat skid plate myself yet so I'm just going off theory and what I've heard, another thing I thought of you most likely would need is adjustable lower control arms for the rear axle to adjust the rear pinion angle because the t-case will be moved up. All in all it could be over your budget but so will a quality lift. The beauty of doing a this is that latter on when you want even more clearance... And Most likely you will you can then add a small lift for even better clearance with minimal lift

I had the day star coil spacers in my tj for a couple years got some decent nitro shocks and jks sway bar disconnects and ran 32x11.5 tires it was a great set up for trail riding and it handled like it was stock.

You could also look at these two options from DPG Offroad. Dirk is a great guy with different setups. First one is the economical setup:

If you think you want something a bit better and want to stretch your budget, I think you would be better off with:

You can call Dirk and he would make sure you have the correct springs for your Jeep. Not just some generic spring rate. Plus, it is hard to beat the OME shocks. IMHO, definitely worth to spend the few extra bucks, if you can, for some great shocks and springs.

Good luck on what you decide to do, but in the interest of research, I would give Dirk a call. He is very personable and knowledgeable.
