I’m trying to get a new lift kit with fox 2.0 shocks but every place I get a quote at tells me a different story on which lift kit to get.

I’ve been told rough country is good, Rubicon Express is better and Rock Krawler is great. I’m running 35’s on my JKU now on a pro comp lift (which no shop can tell me what size lift I have on now). I bought the JKU as is from a private seller 3 years ago and I want to change the ride to be a little more smoother. I’ve told each shop I want to run 37s after I wear down my 35s and do some off roading as well and each came back with a 3.5in to a 4in lift but each a different brand.

I need help deciding on which brand lift to get as well as short or long arm. PLEASEEEEEE HELPPP! 😫

Do you know what the advantages are between Long and Short arm systems are? They aren't just terms, they are practical applications that handle different scenarios. Do you know the major issues you will likely run into going to a 37?

"One does not simply 'GO' to a 37".

There is no magic answer. There is no "this is best" answer. Do some reading on this site. There is TONS of info on lift kits. If you are going to put the money into this rig, do it smart. Know what you are wanting to utilize it for based on percentage.

Daily driver - 50%
Trails - 20%
Moderate difficulty trails - 10%
Rock Crawling - 5%
Mud - 10%
Smoking pot and listening to music - 5%

In my opinion... and you will see lots of different opinions here... These are my favorites and my not so favorites based on reading, reading, more reading and having driven or been in rigs with these suspensions.

Ive done some light reading on lift kits and the difference between short and long arm. I know if I go with a higher lift than 3.5 and going bigger on tires Ill run into some issues with the driveshaft, axels, and gears. I do mostly pavement driving now but I want to set everything up to go into light trial riding, mudding and do moderate trail. Im still a noob on this stuff so thank you for your input its greatly appreciated!

While having a huge lifted Jeep on big tires is nice and all, just understand to do it right, you will be spending some money. I would take it on some trails and see what it can do. Build it from there. If you are doing light to moderate trails, you probably won't need the benefits of a full control armed system (this is when the lifts start getting expensive). For most people, a simple 2.5 lift and 35's will get them everywhere they want to go.

2 Years ahead of you (still NOOB) and can only say there is no light reading. Light read about aesthics...this topic effects a bunch of stuff. Spend the time and heavy read. Be honest with yourself about the %'s. I love my AEV lift, but i'm 95% daily and 5% offroad and have not really had anything to compare with.
Went heavily on advice from my shop and the forums...and 50%.....listening to music.

Ok, smooother is the goal.... So, you are going to want a plush shock and a lift with a lighter spring rate. I would steer you towards the Mopar 2" lift. The spring rates are just a tick higher than stock and it has the Fox shocks you are interested in. I would just add a set of front control arms to set caster instead of the cam washers that it comes with.

The other "known to ride nice" lift is the AEV 2.5 XT lift... I feel like I need to add more to it than the Mopar to get what I want, but it's good too. AEV also leaves in the factory nose down rake that many people want to get rid of.


Rubicon Express has very stiff springs, you won't like it. No to Rough Country... Rock Krawler is nice stuff as is Metalcloak, but if you aren't running heavier with a lot of gear, they will ride firmer too.

I like the AEV 2.5 kit with geometry correction brackets.
I add Rancho rear sway bar links and move the OEM links to front.
You can also add Procomp front brake line drop brackets to simplify the installation.

This combination rides and handles better than stock, and was developed by the same engineer that developed the suspension for Jeep.

What you need will vary based on usage; my own list:

Street Jeep (nothing beyond logging trails), up to 35":
  • 2.5" lift with springs, shocks, sway bar links
  • Adjustable control arms or correction brackets
  • Correction brackets for track bars
  • Wheels with proper offset
  • Exhaust spacer
Jeep that goes off road, up to 35":
  • Same list as above, plus:
  • 4 adjustable control arms
  • Longer, braided brakes lines
  • Spring retainer clips or straps
  • Front and rear adjustable track bars
  • Front driveshaft
  • Truss/gusset D30 front axle, or a D44
  • Trimmed fenders or flat metal flares if necessary
  • Bigger brakes once the OEM wear out
  • Armor if playing in the rocks (diff covers, skid plates)
  • Regear if necessary (a Rubicon with 4.10 is fine on 35's, other Jeeps may not be)
37"/38" tires:
  • Same list as above, plus:
  • 3.5" lift
  • Regear
  • Trussed and gussetted D44 axles front and rear, OR D60 axles ($$$)
  • Chromolly axle shafts
  • Flat fenders
  • Big brake kit
  • 1350 rear driveshaft, 1310 or 1350 front
  • Heavy duty steering box, or hydro assist
  • Beefy tie rod and drag link with 1.5 or 2 ton ends
40" tires and above:
  • 1-ton axles (D60, Ford 8/9 inch)
  • Long-arm lift with coilover suspension
  • 1350 everything
  • Supercharger or turbo, or Hemi or LS engine to motivate it
  • Marry MacKenzie Bezos to help pay for all that stuff

$10-15 k for 37's for sure.

for 40+, up to $100k! This guy I know spent close to that:



Others like BlueBabySound on this forum spent less but still a lot. Then again he's a millionaire rock star!

Light offroading and 37"? That's like saying you're buying a top fuel dragster to go through the Starbucks drive thru window.

I did light to moderate offroading last season with my 100% stock JKU including the OEM Wrangler all season tires. cdeslandes list is great. Put some $$ on each of these. Also understand that the higher you go up the list, the worse your rig will be on the street. The absolute best street setup is 100% stock.

About 6 years ago I was in a very prominent builders shop here in Phoenix and asked, what does it take to run 40's... He said write me a check for $25k and come back next week and you'll be on 40's. Then when you're ready to take on the big stuff, come back with another $15K and we can turn you loose on the tough stuff.... So his view, you can survive on $25k but need about $40k to do it right.

I offroaded my Rubicon stock (except for a winch and some skid plates) for a year. Learned a lot. Then I knew exactly what I wanted, lifted and went to 34's. Wheeled that for 3 more years. Now on 35's working my way to 37's. The skills are slowly climbing along with the Jeep's ground clearance.

Yep, use the tire diameter as an exponent!

One way to look at it:

Cost = 2 ^ (R/2.6)​

where R is the tire diameter.

I absolutely love my Rock Krawler 3.5" X-Factor Long Arm lift for a mostly daily driver and light off-roading (camping and beach days). I have it on a 06 LJ with 35's, I put $12K into its setup.

just beware of their shocks and customer service. I have their older model shocks that they discontinued recently. they all blew leaks after only about 3000 miles and I sent them back to be rebuilt. paid the money, they told me it would be 3-5 days turn-around but it took 4 WEEKS to get them back. And when they did finally arrive both rears began leaking shock fluid as soon as I put the jeep back on the ground. Called them immediately and they said they'd send me out another set in a couple days instead of making me take these off and send them back. THAT was 6 weeks ago. call and email them every week. when they DO answer they say they'll have them out in 2-3 days to me. Just spoke to them again this morning and got the same run-around..."our machine broke again, we'll get them out to you monday" that was the 3rd time in 6 weeks I've been told they'll be out Monday.

anyways, as far as their lifts...I recommend it unless something breaks and you need customer service. Just stick with your FOX shocks plan and you're good. After almost 3 months with broken shocks I'm researching replacements as we speak...shame I have to replace $4000 worth of shocks after only 3000 miles.

Plus they are more prone to rust than any brand out there, this is just one of many threads here also many in other sites. Who knows if they have fixed their issues.
