So I'm new to this whole thing put giving it a shot add i have stalked this site for quite some time. I'm looking at putting on new tires,a lift and feint bumper. Currently i have my eye set on the Nitto trail grapplers. I plan on getting 17" xd series rims and lifting 2.5"(mainly a city commuter ). I've got several questions so I'll just list them and if you have an opinion or knowledge please leave some input.

Are 35" tires too big for a 2.5" lift if I want to add a new bumper on the front with winch at some point; as well as, a new rear bumper.

At what point do you need to worry about regearing? I live in Denver so not site if altitude plays a factor or not.

Can a 3" lift be added without doing other major upgrades?

my Jeep is primarily for city commuting(my wifes) except for the weekends when we go up and do occasional four wheeling nothing too crazy, but enough that warrants a lift. I'm new to the whole jeep thing so to try not to be too harsh with all my dumb questions.

Year, model and transmission will help in determining whether or not you will want to regear.


2.5" is fine for 35's

At 3" you will want to start looking at other components such as brake lines, adjustable arms etc...to have good steering and ride quality.

If its mainly a commuter I would look into aev. The ride and handling are superb. If you are going 2.5, get a lift that replaces the springs, shocks and addresses the sway bar end links.

a 2.5 lift will be higher than advertised. you will most likely get around 2.5 if you have additional add on weight. The 35's will suffice.

If your offroading though, you will need to get some bump stops to compensate for the articulation. 35's + no bump stops + full articulation = damaged fenders

Good call, get a kit that includes bumpstops...very important

Thanks for all of the advice. Its a 2012 Wrangler sport. I know it has the newer v6 engine. Does that help figuring out the re-gearing situation?

Also can anyone explain why some tires stick out further then others on Jeeps?

Has to do with the amount of backspacing on the wheels. I think the stock wheels are neutral backspacing. My Pro Comps are -4" so they stick out a little beyond the fenders.
Most on the forum claim that 35s can be done on pentastar wranglers because of the extra horsepower.
Those of us with the 3.8s need to regear because it's already a dog with the 33's I have on. A regear is in the budget for next year, so I can bump up to 35s when I burn up my current tires.
Look into the Teraflex 2.5" spacer lift. Either get the kit with the shocks or buy your own favorite brand for the size lift.
You don't need to spend big money on coil lifts if your not seriously rock crawling. I've been on obstacle courses, over culvert pipes, steep hills, full flex'd and never had a problem. Best thing is I still have factory ride and handeling on the road.

I am going to take a guess that you are on 3.21 gears with an automatic. If you are looking at 35's then yes, it will leave A LOT to be desired and I would 100% recommend a re-gear, to 4.56.

You will run higher RPM to push those 35's and will lose final drive/over drive, which shouldn't be ok.

Ok cool. I was looking at the tera flex 2.5...think thats the route I'm going to go. The tranny is a standard so I wouldn't think it would lag too much.

COJK, I am with Dan, if you have the 3.21's, you will want to regear. Anything higher and I would say give it a shot. There is a lot hype about regearing on the forums. I say give it a shot before you sink the money into it if your running higher than the 3.21's.

The TeraFlex lift is a nice one. Here is what I would do:
TeraFlex JK 2.5 inch Lift Kit, W/out Shocks

TeraFlex JK Exhaust Spacer Kit for 2012-13 Driver and Passenger

Bilstein

That would get you a nice starting point to your lift.
