I'm starting to shop for an LJ, I don't have too many "must haves" on the list
I-6 and good frame and full doors/hardtop are the only real things that would cause me to walk away

Now the G/F says, you've always wanted an LJ find an LJ and don't get the TJ just because they're easier to find but I want it to be an automatic...……….


How wide spread is the LJ automatic/PCM issue? is it fixable? is it a matter of when not if? I don't want to find the LJ of my dreams just to have to abandon it in the front yard and watch mother nature reclaim it

If you get a 04 LJ it will be automatic and will not have the pcm issues as 04 has TCM separate from
Pcm

All 04 LJ are automatic

All LJ are 4.0

All LJ have a D44 rear

Not sure if all are full door and don’t think all have a hardtop

I have a 05 LJ with automatic. I was concerned about PCM issues, but there are several sources for repair or replacement, if it happens.

Never had one significant issue with my Auto LJ. Has never left me stranded, starts every time, purrs like a kitten, shifts like silk, rides like a Cadillac and dominates all terrain.

For the "Computer Issues", from where I'm sitting, it's a bit of an unsolved mystery. Like Big Foot and UFOs. There are so many folks on the forums who have never owned an LJ that read the extensive threads on LJ PCM ghost hunting and come the conclusion that Auto LJs are Lemons. They will be quick to advise you to not even consider the purchase of one.

I do, however, recognize that there is absolutely some merit to the Faulty PCM claims. 05-06 were revolutionary years in the automotive industry. Mostly due to Fuel Economy Regulations, the 42RLE Transmission was one of the first transmissions with several new bits of technology like the Electronically Modulated Converter Clutch, Variable Line Pressure, Adaptive Shifting and even Auto Stick. So you can see, the presence of bugs in the system is likely unavoidable. But hey, it's a computer. What kills computers? Heat and corrosion. If folks are that worried about it, there are preventative measures you can take to at least keep the PCM cool.

I'm sure you're doing plenty of research on the subject and that's exactly what you'll want to do. Then come to your own conclusion. If I had the $, I would have 100 Auto LJs. IMO they are the Holy Grail, or at least the best looking Jeep ever produced. Right up there with the J10 & CJ8, and they will impress everyone at the mall every time you roll up to the Orange Julius.

That's kinda what I'm seeing, I'm not scared of the, they built stuff, stuff sometimes fails world, my primary vehicle with a roof (I commute on my motorcycle) is a Ford 6.0 diesel and everyone on the internet knows they're a ticking time bomb (they're really not)
I'm just trying to separate the facts from the internet "chafe"
If the little lady wants an automatic and that means I can spend money "improving" it (instead of buying jewelry) then an automatic it shall be

The pcm issue is not a LJ specific problem, it's a 05-06' auto problem. If you do get it, you won't fix it permanently. Why not just buy an 04' and avoid it? LJs are a dime a dozen in my area and don't sell for anymore than TJs.

LJ's in general are a lot harder to find out here in commiefornia so choosing a specific year might not be an option (and don't even think of being picky about color) but that '04 being different than '05-'06 is handy info to have, learn something new every day.
Does venting the hood and releasing some of the heat help at all with keeping the PCM cooler?

sure it'll keep it cooler, but that doesnt mean it wont still have the issue. even then, its not like the 05-06 autos are ready for the junkyard. from what i've seen it affects a lot more 06s than 05s and its just a hard shift from 1st to 2nd until the trans is warmed up. if you let the jeep warm up for 3-5 min you wont experience the issue.

i'd look for an 04 but if a super clean 05-06 came along for the right price i would take a look. I would ask for them to not run the jeep for a few hours before a test drive and check the engine temp manually while looking over the jeep before driving it.

It's good to know that it's not an EOTWAWKI situation, if it does pop up does the PCM need to be replaced or is there a reflash?
There are more '05-'06 units within 200 miles of me right now, but I'm not ready to pull the trigger just yet so maybe selection will improve in the next few months

Theres a fix for the 05-06 issues now. I think it is called wranglerfix (how clever). Hes a member on here and on another forum and has a youtube video on it. But the few posts I have seen they look to be promising.

"Fix". They actually just take Dodge Junkyard PCMs and Reprogram them with your VIN #. Then the guy lied, saying that they "reverse engineered" the 05-06 Auto Computer and you can get an all new re-manufactured better than factory PCM for a low low price of $600. Never a smart move to trust a guy who's trying to sell you something. Like buying into global warming because of Elon Musk, then buying a Tesla.

What we need to do send one of these faulty modules to Rossman Group or some facility that repairs PCBs so they can tell us exactly what is failing.

I'm not sold yet on the WranglerFix product until I see reports of much higher mileage....like 2,500+. But, curious why you think they are lying?

I've been working with Flight Systems Engineering Group for several months. They are the company that Chrysler licensed to re-manufacture the PCM's after the Huntsville electronics plant was shut down. They are a large company (actually recently acquired by Dorman) with very sophisticated equipment. Even so, they are unable to consistently re-manufacture a working PCM. So I do wonder how a company like WranglerFix claims to have uncovered the secret to a reliable PCM for the '05-'06's.

OMG, that red one may be the baddest TJ/LJ I've ever seen! Nice!! Blue one isn't too shabby either!

Re: Hood venting - Remember/be-aware that the LJ's (at least mine ) comes with a sound/insulating blanket on the hood.


I have an 05 that does not exhibit the pcm problems (at 39k currently).


Don't forget about the OPDA and the gas tank overflow issues. Do a fly and drive to/from Denver, lots for sale here (04's included) w/o rust and relatively low miles, prices are generally 15-20k.

Stop overthinking. You want an LJ with an automatic, buy one. I’ve had all 3 years and had over 100k on each without a single problem. Every vehicle line has some sort of problem with a few of their vehicles. You’re never going to avoid that… Just buy what you want
