Do you want to drop 9k and be done, or spend 3k and build and fix it up?

how tall are you? unless you're vertically challenged the 5 is difficult to get into and out of, I'd go with the 7 just for that (I'm 6'3"). 9k is a lot when you're looking for a CJ. You need to figure out what you want in it before you even start shopping though. AMC drivetrain or SBC swap? Lifted, if so how high? Any preference on tires? You should be able to find a running CJ in pretty good shape rust-wise (so you don't have to weld) for less than 5k on craigslist if you look. Just make sure you take your time with it and don't get excited and buy the first thing that looks good. That should leave you plenty to get it started at least.

im 6'2 and im going to swim in college, get in and out will not be any trouble for me. I want to be able to run 33's or 35's bot of which would be x14.5. Im sure that means new drive shafts and possibly beefy axles. its just going to be a beach cruiser. I want it to run, look good, and be able to get me wherever i might want to go on the beach

Well if you have that kind of dough to spend why not go with a yj? I had a cj5 and it was a pain to get in and out of and I'm only 6ft. Plus my head was almost scraping the top. There are tons of 87-95s out there and a pretty decent one could be had for around 5k. Then you would have some scratch left over if you need to upgrade or fix anything. CJ's are getting tougher to find, especially one that is in decent shape. You may get more bang for your buck with a yj.

I wouldnt mind in trading my cj5 for a yj or cj7. Its hard to fit the wife and kids in a cj5 plus find room for gear. Plus Im 6'3" and with the top on I have to fold myself up to get in. Dont get me wrong i like my cj5 but i just need a little omre room.

I have a 84cj7 that I would sell you but I have more money in it than I have brains( so my wife says). Good luck finding one. I would suggest getting a cj7 over a cj5 anyday.

I'm six foot tall and getting in/out of a five gets old real quick. Get a cj7 and you'll have more leg room, storage, stability and they have a higher value if you ever want to sell it.

I have a CJ5 and a 06 TJ, of course they are both jeeps but one brings the comfort of the living room and the oher is built with a purpose. If all you are doing is cruising I would get a Iron Duke engine enjoy all the benefits of being a CJ5 owner (there is a difference) and enjoy running for a week on fuel. If you plan on getting radical with Mtn. 4xing the a Iron Duke is not for you, but snow and sand ( not sand dunes but wet sand) is all in a light foot anyways. I am 6' tall and getting in is easy, out not so but you want it to be in so no problems.

I like my CJ5. I'm 6'2" and you learn to get in and out without much problem. I prefer the 5 for snaking through trails cause it's smaller and nimble. For what your doing, I would go with a 7 or a YJ just for the comfort factor, but if you find a nice 5, by all means, try it. I like the 5s better for me, but some people like the 7. I had a 7 when I was in college that I bought off of a repo man. It was beat. Having the YJ is a little bit the same as the 7, and I love my YJ. It is my "modern", "comfortable" jeep, but still has CJ characteristics...leaf springs and still easy on "electronic" items.

My wife always tells me we can't do the Jamboree without the CJ...Everyone just stares and drools. Not many 5s are around as they used to be....coolness factor.

If you can drive both the 5 and 7, you should be able to make up your mind REAL quick. And 9k you should be able to find a pretty sweet babe magnet (better than a puppy)
