Hey all I am looking at buying a used jeep. But I have a few questions. First is the 4 cylinder worthless for off roading when lifted and with 33" tires

Congrats!

a 4 cyl., 33" tires, and an axle regear to 4.88 is a great 'wheeling combination, IMO. Off road your Jeep will go anywhere another 33" tire'd Jeep will. It's mainly the freeway where the 4 cyl.'s lack of power is evident. with 4.88s though it's not too bad IMO.

Some do just fine with the stock gears and 33"s, but in my area with all the mountains, I did not enjoy the combination much on the freeway. Around town was fine still - just a little slower off the line. I did not personally like the stock gears and 33s off road as much, the Jeep seemed to not have the throttle response I was used to. But again a switch to 4.88 gears from the stock 4.10s (assuming it's a 5 speed Jeep) made a great difference.
