OK I'm new to CJ's and just got mine on the road. It drives decent for a 1974 vehicle but the steering seems to get loose at times. For the most part its ok but uneven roads or roads with "ruts" in them it would easily get away from you if you're not paying attention. I understand its old and older vehicles drive like that but.... I guess my question is; is this normal for a 74' CJ5 or is something possibly loose or needs replacing in my steering components?

How is your tire pressure? Uneven or low pressure could cause that type of feeling. Have someone else turn the steering wheel while you look at the joints See if there is anything loose. Is this something new or has it always been this way?

I'll check the tire pressure tomorrow.
Couldn't tell ya if this is something new or not. I'm the new owner and the above circumstance was the first time taking it for a long ride. Other than test driving. Which I didn't get up to and hold the speed for as long as I did. It seemed fine for the most part (being a vehical from 1974) but on some of the roads it would get "jerky". Being from where I am, most of our roads suck and it makes for a sketchy ride. Also it doesn't have PS. Would that be a major issue? Would new ball joints maybe fix it? Maybe New bearings?
