I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0, Dana 44 front and rear axles and a Manual trans. Yesterday I was going to brake and there was a loud grinding and clunking noise coming from the rear end of the jeep. The jeep was also violently shaking. Since then the jeep has continued the same pattern but only as I brake. I've noticed a slight grinding noise when off the accelerator while driving but nothing as bad as when I brake. Anyone know where I should start looking for what might be wrong? I don't want to sit there and take the whole rear end apart. Thanks!

When were the brakes last serviced? Anything look strange when you pull the rear drums?

Sounds as if something is stuck or hanging in a position it shouldn't.

I was thinking it might be the drums but I crawled under there and noticed the trust on my axle broke off so I'm guessing now that it's gears...
