If im not mistaken, jeeps came from the factory with either a 15 gallon or 19 gallon tank. I have a 98 and am pretty sure i have the 15, yet when my ticker hits EMPTY, and i fill up, it fills up 7-9 gallons each time then clicks full. Is my reserve really that big or is my fuel guage messed up? Or is this a common issue? Not real worried about it since its consistent but just curious why it does this

If you have the 4.0 engine, I'm pretty sure you have the 19 gallon tank. So if you fill up does the gauge go all the way to full? If it only goes up to 1/2 full then it could be the sender is bent but if it goes all the way from full to empty in 7 gallons it would have to be something else.

Common issue. There are several other threads on this topic. My 2002 does the same thing...when I'm in the red I can usually put about 14 gallons in the 19 gallon tank.

Ya ive got the 4.0. Its done it ever since i bought it in December of 2011. I figured wranglers just had a small tank but sfter reading some thats not so much the case. It goes from full to empty and when i fill up its always between 7-9 gallons. I think the most ive ever put in it was like 10-11 gallons.

I do know that when the low fuel light comes on in my 04 that there is 2 gallons left. Not sure how many gallons it takes from there to fill cause I never have the cash to fill it up. Haha. It is a 19 gallon in mine.

Fill up a spare can and drive it till it runs out of gas.

I just filled up with my gas light on and about a millimeter of red left before the E and it only took 15.5 gallons.

I don't typically run my tank that low but when I have this is my exact experience.

I always think about throwing a gas can in and see if I can hit 100 miles after the light comes on but never have.

Mine says that too but it definitely does not work that way on my Jeep. Seems more like 5 gallons, but like I said above I have never ran it out to test it, just basing it on calculated fuel mileage and amount needed to fill up.

Let me just say that in the manual there are two sentences that kind of contradict themselves. One says"when the light comes on" you have 2 gallons left and one says " when the arrow initially moves to E " you have two gallons left. Well the E is at the bottom of the Red Line but the Light comes on at the Top of the Red Line so, is there 2 or 4 gallons in there ? Haha. I'm just reading what they put in the manual. That seems kinda sketchy to me.

I've been going with the theory that I have another 30 or so miles left when the light comes on, that way I don't end up Walking. I have never run it till it quits yet.

what is stamped on the drivers side of the gas tank, OP? The part is located there, you can see it if you are standing at the filler cap, squat down and look at the side by the wheel well. My 97 is a 19 gal and before I replaced my fuel pump it would do the same as you, empty and hold 12-13 gal. Once I replaced the pump, I get an accurate reading.

By the way all of them are 19 gal just the 15 has a longer vent hose.

Jeeps after 99 were required to have a 19 gallon tank. If it was before this, more than likely it is just 15 gallons. Mine is a 98 and 15

Why the need to run it dry, who really cares at 16 gallons that's all you need to know. I do not think you can run the tank completely dry and take 19 gallons. There is always some left so the pump is not running dry, it's the pickup that controls when you run out of gas.
