I have been doing some thinking lately and i may be saying goodbye to my Wrangler brothers for the time being anyway. I will be keeping it in the family however. I test drove two Commanders today.

I have been having more and more trouble with my old YJ. I have replaced the clutch twice in a 6 month period. I'm developing a pretty serious wobble at highway speeds. I need new u joints, and possibly a rear axle. My jeep is a great toy and I am going to be sad to see it go.

I test drove two Commanders today. One a 2007 with the 3.7L v6 and one a 2009 with the 4.7 v8 (not hemi). Both with relatively low mileage. Both under 70k on them. Very nice vehicles, and very capable off road.

The dealership offered me 3,000 trade in value for my YJ. I only went to look, and test drive. Told them I would think on their offer over night.

I love the wranglers, will miss mine dearly. I just need a more 'reliable' daily driver. I just can't afford to dump $1000 plus into my YJ every 6 months just to keep it running. It's got well over 200k on the 2.5l so I know it's only a matter of time before that goes too.

Any advice on either of the two engines on the commander will be greatly appreciated. I'm assuming the 3.7L is the same engine in the JKs?

I am still thinking on trading my YJ I may hold onto her. I'm just considering a trade to lower my monthly payment.

I always liked the commanders, they are good looking vehicles! You can always stick around the forums and help out us newbie YJers even if you trade yours in. Good luck with the new ride!

man ya might as well keep the yj and buy straight out, they make it sound like they give you a deal but they don't, I worked for a jeep stealership long enough to know..
the camanders are nice and if I were you I would get a hemi version if you can if not then stay with the 4.7...

then you can build your old yj the way you want..jmo

best of luck with what ever you decide,--and don't forget to post up some pics...

Go with the V8. Commanders are heavy and should of just came with a V8. They are built off the same platform as the Grand Cherokee, just slightly heavier. Also, make sure it has Quadra Trac II tranny or the optional Quadra Drive II system. These both offer 4 lo in them (I think), as the basic Quadra Trac is just 4 wheel drive with no 4 lo.

I have Quadra Drive II in my Grand Cherokee Hemi 5.7 Limited. Here is what it is about:

The ultimate 4WD system, however, is Quadra-Drive II. Its NV245 full-time transfer case works with Electronic Limited Slip Differentials (ELSD) in the front and rear that use electronically controlled clutch packs to control and instantly direct power to each axle as needed. The NV245 contains a center differential and its own electronically controlled clutch pack, which makes the 'case capable of everything from completely open to fully locked, with infinite possibilities in between. Quadra-Drive II includes Neutral, for use when being towed. While the limited-slips are designed for off-road use, they also work automatically in daily driving--the ELSD release the clutch packs in front to prevent crow hop and allow the wheels to rotate at different speeds in turns. Quadra-Drive II-equipped Jeeps use an electric T-handle lever to switch between 4-Hi and 4-Lo.

Orrrrrrr drop one of the 4.2 engines from eBay With the 4.0 head on in your yj, replace all the parts to make the engine run good, and keep the yj. That's would I would do. It would be alot cheaper.

Agreed. Don't trust dealerships. Keep the YJ and look on CList for a Commander. You will be glad you did trust me. :thumb:

Many good jeep models especially for a daily driver! I have 3 one ton yjs and 2 5.9L zjs one built and one stock. Had a few comanches and many xjs. The grand cherokees make great daily drivers! Lots of luxury and comfort.
Commanders r cool looking like but didn't have a long life due to them being a death trap in the rear seat I hear.

I agree I hate stealerships! Craigslist is a awesome place to find deals! If u can put the yj to backup vehicle duty. I see yjs as this anyways more of as fun summer vehicle, wheeler jeep and a grand cherokee or xj as primary daily driver. Xjs r getting old tho sad because they could have lasted longer than 2001easily

I had a 2006 Hemi Commander Limited. Awesome vehicle. I would skip the 6 cylinder and get at least the 4.7. Make sure to get the Quadra Drive II system. It is the best four wheel drive system available today. My Commander took me places that had grown men begging to get out of the vehicle. Simply Awesome!

The 4.7 I've been looking at, and drove last night does have QDII. I've heard nothing but good things about this system.

Ok. So my thinking is erratic. I think I was just upset about the fact that I had to have clutch work done twice in 6 months. IM KEEPING MY JEEP. After thinking more about it, and talking with the dealership more. I asked them what they would do with it if I were to trade it. They said, "Most likely auction, or scrap" I couldn't stand the thought of a running and driving YJ being murdered by a money hungry dealership.

If my fears of the motor going kaput come true, I'll just take that opportunity to drop a 350 in it. I can't believe that I actually thought about getting rid of my baby. She smokes, shakes, and is louder than hell, but that's my Jeep, and I love it to death.

I hope none of you lost any respect for me. Im still a die hard Jeeper, I promise. I may just have to take her out and get her muddy this weekend in celebration of our new found love.
