Hello everyone,

I am writing to see if anyone has put a 5 cylinder Mercedes Turbo Diesel into a CJ5 or CJ7 in the state of California and successfully registered the jeep? Just thought it would be nice to see what it took to make this legal to drive around town and if it has been done.

What I know so far is that the engine you are swapping into a car in CA must be newer than that car itself. It also seems that it may need to come from a similar class of vehicle, but that info I haven't been able to confirm yet. I know there are kits to do this, but I know I would love to be able to drive this down the road as well as hit the trails.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone and thank you for your help and insight.

It's getting harder to do now so really the easiest way is if the jeep is smog exempt but I wouldn't use a Mercedes engine the cummins 4bt is a lot better engine to use and is a great fit.
