Well my wife sent me this picture today, our 2002 turned 150,000 miles today. She still runs great. The 4.0 really is a great engine.. Just done basic maintenance, no major mechanical work. I know it is going to need some eventually..

I have seen them go a long time...Mine is at 125K(plan on much more), my buddy with a cherokee 4.0 has 285K...still going. gotta love that.

I too have a 2002 and I'm at 154,000. Engine still runs great, just has a bit of body rot from New England salty winters. I would grab some Bedliner and go to town on it.

I have a 2001 4.0L with 106,000 miles.

I asked a whole lot of people about the reliability of these engines before I bought the Jeep a couple years ago. From what I was told, they are VERY GOOD engines.

Don't plan on EVER getting rid of the Jeep, so hope it can make 300,000 miles, if I drive it that far!

Don't drive it in the winter unless it's nice outside and roads are dry. Don't want that body rot that Gabriel speaks of. Wouldn't take but 1 winter for that to start happening here. I knew the previous owner and Jeep was never driven in winter very much.

Plan on sand blasting the under side and re-applying rust proofing next spring.

You guys and your 4.0s my 2.5 has 200,000 on it and runs like a champ, ya it might be slightly under powered:( ok ok a lot under powered but that's y I am putting in a 4.0... Wahoo

1999 Sahara with 148,489 miles. I've replaced the water pump (it didn't break, just thought it was time) and have not touched anything else on the engine except a warranted fuel injector when I first got it. Tough vehicle.

The wife's 01 XJ with 4.0 engine turned over 140k this year. It still looks and runs like new. It will outlive the both of us, or my 05 TJL, whichever comes first. The straight-six and AW-4 transmission are very durable designs. It is sad to see DC scrap them to "modernize."

Newer aint' better. And we ain't sellin' neither. Don't ask. And stop drooling so much.

Yeah the only thing that really worries me is the clutch, I thought I felt it slip when I was home on R/R, but it has never happened again. I am just expecting to get that email. "Honey the Jeep won't move" !! But considering my wife learned to drive a standard on this when we got it in 2002, which was brutal on it for a bit :) It is still going strong..

Dangit! This thread just reminded me that I turned 150k today and I missed it! I left the house at 149,973 with a 90 mile trip ahead of me. I missed the 100k turnover too.

That thing is gorgeous. I love the old design so much, to hell with looking modern!

It is truly a work of art. She lets me drive it once in a while too. That's when you know a woman loves you --when she allows you to drive her Jeep!

Newer ain't better. I'd swap my TJL for a mint-condition Cherokee Sport in a heartbeat. It was truly a classic design. The engine still looks brand-new, and is so clean, a doctor could operate in there. Best of all, it's still bone-stock, and with our help, survived Obama's "Cash for Clunkers" nonsense.
