i have seen some lifts kits come with materials to drop the transfer case or some come with a mml. is one beter then the other. or if i skip the whole kit thing and buy everthing in pieces which would be the way to go.

I think a MML is better but let me tell you it is a pain to install!! It's the worst thing I have tried so far!!

it seems like a lot of the higher end kits come with a mml, that's why i was wondering.

I agree on the it's better, but disagree on the PITA. I have done 3 so far on different Jeeps. All of em went very easily. One side is a piece of cake, the other is more of a pain, but still not too bad.

And the reason why a MML is preferred to a T-Case drop is that the drop sacrifices ground clearance. Just the thing you are trying to gain with the lift.

If you pieced it together go ahead and spend the extra money and get one piece MML's. I bought the spacers against the advice of some and I really regret it now.

i always thought it was just spacers. they make a one piece kit also?

OK - I don't want to sound like a complete jerk, but I am gonna have to disagree with you again. I think that they are both completely worthwhile depending on you and your Jeep.

If your OEM motor mounts are worn out or you don't mind a tad bit more vibrations, get one piece. If they are good and you want to keep the engine noise the same, get the spacers.

Of the three I have done, two were spacers and one was a whole mount. I would say that they are about the same install wise.

Yeah there are a couple of different companies that make one piece. I know blkjp runs MORE bombproof, and they are about 140 I think and 4wd hardware sells a one piece set for about 90 I think.

I wish you would have been here to telp me yesterday because I fought with them for about 4 hours and still don't have it completely done. I had 2 main problems, 1 was getting the back bolt started back into the passenger side mount. It lined up but for some reason would not start. I tried for like an hour then finally when I got it in it was cross threaded, and the second problem was getting the through bolt back into the passenger side mount. It would go all the way in the front hole to the back hole but i could not get the back hole to line up. It was like wedged in the bracket that holds it to the motor and I could not get it out!! It took for ever!!

If you haven't already - try loosening the tranny mount bolts on the skid plate. That will give more wiggle room to get stuff lined up.

And yes - just two mounts.

yep loosen the 4 screws on the tranny skid to alow it to move forward since the engine will end up tugging the tranny forward a bit. I asked that in another thread but never saw any one answering it.. does any one have a blueprint of the motor mounts that they can share?

I wish I would have thought of it, but I didn't think about that. I just took off the fan shroud and took loose the transfer case shifter bracket then jacked it up and tried to get everything lined up. The main thing that was the problem was the passenger side mount got hung in the bracket on the motor. That is why nothing would line up, but i think now that i got the through bolt into the mount everything is lined up good. Now i just have to get the bolt back into the back side.

help with lift

i have a 97 TJ and looking to do a budget lift to ride on 33s. i found a 2" kit for a good price. will i be good?

I was able to do the MML portion of my lift (including removal of t-case drop) in my garage, by myself, with conventional tools in about 1.5 hours. I would not characterize it as easy but it certainly isn't hard. There will be a bit of cursing, prying, etc. but it does not require any sort of "advanced" knowledge or special tools. There are concise instructions out there regarding the fan shroud, AC issues, and all the little steps to make it an easier project. Just be ready to sacrifice a little elbow grease and some knuckle skin.

Note that this thread is 7 years old. :)

2" lift - you should not need a mml or transfercase drop
3" lift - mml and possibly a few washers (<1/4") as a transfercase drop
4" lift - SYE/CV
