Bought my YJ back in December and haven't had too many problems. 132k miles on it and apparently the last owner was into mudding given the amount of rust on the underside.
I'm curious though as to what i need to look into changing in the future from those who have done it.
Right now the only real modification besides the appearance is the 33" tires and t-case drop from what i can see. But i'd like to be able to off road in the near future and it would seem that i don't have enough clearance for the tires to do so. I was looking into installing a 4" Rough Country lift but didn't know what else i would need afterwards.

Any advice/tips is greatly appreciated!

If you have 33's and a TC drop you already have a lift. It may even be a 4". Just measure from the bottom of the rocker panel to the ground to see the height. You can also look on the springs themselves. A lot of times even lift that have been on for 5 or more years still have markings somewhere telling you what lift it is.

As far as modifications, the first thing I would do is unbolt the body from the frame and lift it about 3" off with wooden blocks between the frame and body. I would then Por15 the frame, and undercoat the body. If you do that and take your time on it your undercarriage will be rust free for the next 10 years. If you dont and it gets worse you could end up breaking things you need.

If there are still track bars pull them. Also pull the bolts for the leaf springs and grease them, make sure not to overtighten them when you put it back on. Change transmission fluid, TC fluid, front and rear diffs, flush radiator, then start looking for stuff to mod.

I thought I might as well but I don't have much clearance for the tires, so maybe a 2.5" or something. The ride is terrible lol. And if I do get the 4", the t case drop should be enough to keep the driveshaft angle safe?
Also, I've taken the spare off due to cracking from the weight. Any ideas on how to prevent it short of buying a tire carrier?

They make a reinforcement kit for the tailgate for larger tires, but the best option is a new bumper.

For a 4" lift the correct way to do it would be without a TC drop and using an SYE. Some people dont go that way, but that is the only way I would suggest. If you dont plan on wheeling it much you can always look at a small body lift or shackle lift to clear larger tires.

For ride quality, take a look at your shocks. If they are shot they could be causing it to ride horrible. Also see if the PO left in the track bars front and rear. They are not needed and pulling them will greatly improve ride quality if they are still there.

Thanks for the info! And I pulled the front but couldn't get to the tear very easy so I'm waiting until I have time.
As for the PO I have no clue what's been done to it unfortunately. I bought it from a guy who was flipping it. He put in a brand new transmission, re upholstered the seats, and re painted it. Besides the rust it is in excellent shape.
That being said, any idea on what to look for to see what *has* been done to it?
