Hey Jeepers!

I'm Will and this is my 1991 YJ. It's got a Ford 8.8 in the rear with 4.11 gears and a limited slip differential (so it does okay on the streets), stock D30 with an Aussie locker up front, slip yolk eliminator, 5.5" Rubicon Express lift sitting on BFG KO2 33x12.50 15's, and Smittybilt XRC bumpers front & rear with a winch.





Even though I might be a newb on the forum, I'm pretty familiar with Jeeps! I actually just had to let go of my CJ-7 which I literally rebuilt a couple months ago :(:(

Here she is on the day I sold her....


Either way I'm loving my YJ and honestly I've already done pretty much everything I've wanted. I actually installed the Jeepair AC kit last labor day weekend! (Pics to come).

There are still a few things I need/want to do:

-Front pinion seal needs to be replaced
-More external lights
-Hardtop & hard doors
-New aluminum radiator
-Beef up transfer case
-Other misc maintanence

But hey I'm happy to be on the Forum and hope to see all ya'll Arizonans out on the trails!

Good looking Jeep...I like red Jeeps..Like the led bar location...Can you post a closeup of that...I am running the same bumper with a winch...the control pack for the winch is in the way of the lights mounts that came on the bumper...really don't want to relo the control pack....TIA

Thanks sccritterkiller! And the lightbar is held on by two brackets that bolt with the fairlead. I'll snap some pictures and send them when I get a free second.

Full doors!!

So I finally got a set of hard doors and they fit and look great. They need a little work but overall they’re in pretty good shape!

Here they are on the Jeep:




The set did not come with a key so the first order of business is taking out the tumblers so I can go and get them rekeyed so all my door locks match. It’s a pretty easy job, maybe took me about 10 minutes a side and I figured I’d show the process since there isn’t a lot out there on it for the YJ’s.

Tools needed:

Hammer, door panel clip removal tool, Philips head screwdriver, a flathead screwdriver, a T27 Torx head bit and a magnet



1st step is to take the door off the Jeep and set it on a workbench. I have mine propped up on some foam blocks and a piece of foam on the workbench.



Then you need to take off the door panel (mine was already off since I had to manually unlock the door when the lock got stuck)

Once you have the door panel off you’re going to see this metal cover in the corner of the door by the latch. Remove the 5 philips head screws and then the two Torx head screws on the side of the latch. Then just lift up and the cover should come off.





Now you’ll see the latch and lock cylinder. The lock cylinder is connected to the latch by a rod, so swivel the piece of plastic holding the rod in and pull it out on the latch side.



Next you’ll see the lock cylinder has the other end of the rod mounted on the top with a circlip.



Simply push off the circlip with the flat head screw driver and the plate will come off with the rod attached.



The circlip will probably fall into the door so you can use your magnet to pull it out.



All that’s holding the cylinder in now is a black plate that’s flush up against the back of the door. There are two tabs facing out (towards you) and simply push them with a flathead screw driver and the tab will come out. If the plate is really stuck on there you may need some WD-40 and a few light taps on the screwdriver with the hammer.



This is what the tab looks like once you have it out:



Now with everything disconnected, just push the lock cylinder out from the inside and you’re done!

Here’s all the parts:



Reassembly is the opposite of disassembly – and make sure you spray a little white lithium grease on the latches to prevent them sticking in the future.

Now I’m off to get these bad boys rekeyed!

I really like your Jeep. It reminds me of my old YJ I really wish I still had. Here's a pic, not to sidetrack your build thread or anything tho!

What a great looking YJ! They do look very similar. What year was it? Shame you had to sell it but it sounds like you just need to get another one.....:thumb:

I sold it in 2005, I hate myself for it.

I had a 2006 TJ Rubicon for a few years, but its too plastic for me. I WILL get another YJ...MAYBE a CJ7. Maybe...But I want a YJ. Anyway Keep your progress posted! And if you have tech questions ask away. I'm an auto tech for a living and I can try and help ya.

Haha well I appreciate the courtesy! And man that was a pretty sweet rig, but I know how it goes. I definitely will be staying spring under - I've never even had a desire for the SOA and since it's my daily I'll just keep it the way it is lol.

Funny how that works I traded my 94 Bronco for my original CJ-7....not too sure if that was a good deal. When I got it it was pretty rough and I poured tons of time and money into it. Everybody was right on the forums they always said if you own a CJ be ready to wrench every weekend...my god is it true!

And thank you! I appreciate that. I'm pretty familiar with the CJ's, YJ's & somewhat with the TJ, but I can always learn more and that's a very nice offer. I just kinda keep this as my hobby because I'm not sure I could wrench full time I'd probably go crazy!

As a guy who had both the CJ & the YJ, just go with the YJ after 90. You get the 4.0, the AX15, yeah you got the stupid CAD shit but rip it out and you're good to go. Someday I'll throw a CJ front clip on it and an old metal dash..that'd be the way I'd go if I were you! Get the looks of the CJ but the reliability of the YJ.

Yes, when I get ready I will be hunting for a 91-95 YJ. I had the CAD eliminated on that YJ it was nice. I have restored a 74 CJ5 for my old man, its the one in my avatar, I did install howell EFI on it so it runs like a TOP. He really loves it. We've had 12 CJ's and wranglers through my family throughout the years. Ha.

I'm only 22 and all self taught but so far there's nothing I haven't been able to handle.....yet :D I'll be honest I'm not great with differentials and I'm ok at electrical but I'm getting there...so any help is greatly appreciated and needed!

I'm in Western Montana. Jeeps are pricey here, and some have rust. I do have a truck that could tow one from AZ. But, I don't know if the cost of fuel would make it good idea. So i will have to be choosey here in the Northwest. Im only 35yrs old here, I went to UTI in phoenix AZ in 2001 and have been in the automotive field since. I built transmissions for 9 years then moved to the MB dealer and am master certified with MB here in Missoula MT.

What are your future plans with your YJ?

Oh yeah that's a good ways away. I asked the question than thought about it for a second and was like "oh well his name is MTJeepTJ, MT must be Montana" :facepalm:

That's great! Sounds like you're the go to guy. If you can work on Mercedes than Jeeps must be like childs play right?? But that's pretty insane, I know some of the new Mercedes don't even have oil dipsticks!

Well I got the hard doors and I'm picking up my hard top tomorrow from a friend. I have to repaint it and then seal it up really well but I should have it on by tomorrow night. Tonight I've gotta replace my front wheel bearings - they've been making some noise and yesterday I noticed they had some play so it's time for those to go. I've also gotta get new door panels and handles for both of the hard doors and fix my drivers seat recliner as well. After that I gotta do my front pinion seal, water pump and some other misc fixes. It's time for a tune up so that is in it's near future too.

As far as big mods I'm pretty pleased with my setup. Down the road I'd like to replace my LSD & Aussie locker with some OX cable lockers or even e-lockers if I can find some, and I mean after that, that's probably it! I'm so happy with the way it drives and performs that there's really nothing else I'd do to it for now. Eventually when the 4.0 goes I'm thinking about swapping in a 4bt or a 6bt Cummins but that's way down the road.

Alright so time for a little update….

Took my lock cylinders to the locksmith to have them rekeyed. Unfortunately since my locks were from a 1990, my key wouldn’t work (they used one sided keys vs two) and it also turned out one of the locks was broken. He was able to give me one back and keep the other until it’s fixed, which is fine by me.

I also went over and got my hardtop this weekend from a buddy for $300 and my old softtop. The top is in pretty good shape and has the wiper but the paint job was all scratched up and faded and so I decided to repaint it. I repainted it using a quart of Herculiner and mixed in about half a can of Duplicolor black glossy paint; and I think the results came out pretty good! Only took me a couple hours and it was pretty easy considering I rolled it on.

Here’s some before and afters:




I also pulled the little vents off the side and hit them with a coat of black spraypaint.



And this is it on the Jeep:







Overall I’m pretty pleased! The thing seals up pretty well and the Jeep is so much quieter to drive – I can actually finally hear the speakers! I still gotta connect it to the windshield frame and get the little corner seals (it whistles a little bit) but overall, it was a good weekend.

Now I gotta move on to doing the wheel bearings in the front tonight…

Ringing noise - 40MPH & up

So around a month ago I started to notice a ringing noise in the front while driving. It only occurs around 45 MPH and gets louder as I go faster. Honestly it sounded just like a bad wheel bearing so I jacked up the front end and checked for play.

Sure enough when I spun the tires I could hear them making noise and the left one had some play so I ordered some Timken hubs online. (Pretty disappointing that these are sealed hubs - I was hoping it'd be as easy as the ones on my old CJ)

Installation went pretty well but I gotta say it was a pain getting the old hubs off the spindle due to some rust in there. Either way I got it done and have been driving it for about a week and the noise didn't go away! :banghead:

The noise is a lot quieter though and I can barely hear it now but I can tell it's still there. When I had the front end jacked up I checked for noise in the differential but didn't hear anything at all. Plus I would think if it was something in the diff it would happen all the time, not just sometimes but I'm not too sure (please correct me if I'm wrong). I also checked the engine for noise but even when revving it I can't seem to replicate it (even at the RPMS it happens when going down the road) but I just can't seem to figure out what it is.

The only way I can really describe the sound is that it just sounds like a bad bearing but at this point I have no idea what it could be. Any advice would be highly valued!

Did you happen to pull out the axle shafts when you removed the hub bearings and check the u-joints? I've had bad u- and axle-joints make all sorts of weird noises over the years, including one that sounded like a turkey call at certain times.

I checked the u joints initially when I diagnosed the bad bearings. I didn't check them again because I was positive the noise was from bad bearings.

Probably should've checked them when I had the chance but I would think if the U-joint was going out I'd be hearing them click which I don't even at high speeds.

After some debate I'm thinking something may be wrong with the CAD system but still not sure what it could if not that at this point..

Thanks pc1p! I’ll let you know what happens when I pull it off this weekend.

I’m looking at getting one of those CAD eliminators since I really don’t need one with the locker since my driveshaft is spinning all the time anyway.
