I have had cranking problems with my 92 YJ, 4.0L, but thought I had them fixed. The crank sensor, TPS and distributor have all been replaced. Things have been really great on cranking and running fine, until this AM. I was driving about 65 on the interstate and had the following happen:

Noticed headlights dim quickly and go right back to normal brightness. This happened again and then the third time the engine died. The lights all stayed on and the Check Engine light came on. I coasted to the side of the interstate as the engine was dead. Once I got there the engine would not turn over. It would do everything but actually crank. It has a brand new battery as well. Could this be the alternator? I had to have it towed to a shop here in town, but was curious to find out what you thought before i get the diagnosis from the mechanic. Really getting tired of putting money into this kind of crap and not toys.

Thanks for any info.

Just got a call from mechanic and they are saying it shouldn't be the alternator. Battery still has full charge and it is turning over fine, just not cranking. They are still looking and I will update when I find out something. I feel like the meter is going up as I wait. $$$$$ Have been told the JEEP is an acronym for Just Empty Each Pocket.

It has brand new wires and dist cap. I just got an update that says it is blowing fuses (fuel injection, O2 sensor and others). So there is a wire shorting out, that they are trying to trace down. I just had them replace the wiring and reverse light relay that was shorting out and blowing the ignition fuse. What a pain in the arse. Wonder how much it would cost just to rewire the whole rig?

My jeep had problems of not cranking and dying while driving and it turned out to be the auto-shutdown relay. Maybe replace that and see

Maybe a ground issue- which should be cheap, but could also be the ECM faulting...
