Hi all,

I am poised to buy my 3rd wrangler

1. was a 2003 sahra tj-loved it but had to sell for the $$
2. was a 1994 jk- was a little too rickety for me, just sold

Now im looking to purchase #3. Here are my choices.

3a. 1997 Sport TJ- A/C, radio no lift-6 cyl $9800- out the door-135,000miles (dealer)

3b. 1997 Sport T/J NO A/C, radio-lifted-huge tires- 4cyl- $7500otd- 147,000miles (dealer)

3c. 1997 Sport TJ A/C- no radio-no lift- 4cyl- 121,000miles $7000 (private seller)

so im not really into lifts but maybe it would grow on me. of course I would like to pay the lower price but 3a is really growing on me just not sure its worth the price...... help, which is the better buy?? and why?? thx!!

The 4.0 inline six is always going to be the best option.
I wouldn't even consider the 4 cylinder with large tires and a lift.
You will regret it.
10k for a 97 is crazy overpriced. I'd say close to 6500-7000.
I just saw a 2004 with 100k sell for 10k and a 2006 with 80k sell for 11k.
Both by dealers.

You're not giving us much info to go on here but all things being equal? My .02 is to go with the 6cyl. Definitely try to get that price down a bit though.

Since 3a sounds stock. Look up the value on kbb.com or edmunds.com, that will give you the value and what you should pay. Use private party pricing as your negotiating starting point. You say it is $9800 out the door. Depending on the sales tax rate in your area and dealer fees it looks like the purchase price is right around $9000. Well, that is what would be with Ohio sales tax.

Once lifted or other mods are done value can go up or down and kbb and edmunds are hard to use.

Given the limited info I'd go with 3a for the 4.0 & a/c. $9800 is a bit strong though. Unless you just HAVE to buy it now I'd wait & look to buy the 3a jeep for around the 3c price.

Just for reference, I have a 2001 the equivalent of 3a. If someone offered me $9800 it would be gone.

I wouldn't take 9800 for my 98 TJ.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the TJ market is like in your area, but if I had $10k to spend I'd be on craigslist looking at '02-'03 with maybe 120k miles and a sturdy frame.

If you really want a '97, go with a private sale and with a bit of craigslist work you'll get something nice for $7k.

Hey all thanks for all the help and advice. I actually went to pick up 3a, even tho it was overpriced but someone else got it before me, I was really bummed but I saw another one on craigslist the same day. I had to go on a long drive for it but I got it. here are the specs.
1997 sport tj, 133000 miles, auto, radio, no a/c, 6cyl, no lift $7500

tho I really loved 3a im happy to save $2000 for pretty similar specs minus the a/c. will post pics of my new baby tomorrow. thanks fellow jeepers!!
