Turns out I need a new engine for my Jeep. I currently have a 2.5L 4 cylinder in a 98 Wrangler, and want to keep that size. Do I need to find one of the same make and model or will a different engine fit without adjustments?

The same 2.5L would bolt right up to it. Engine swaps (ie to bigger motors) are costly and involved. I myself have a 2.5L in a 99 SE and am looking into a swap over the summer. But if your just looking into keeping the same motor, just find an identical one with less miles and swap it in.

I'm in the same hole you're in right now. I would not find a motor that you have not personally taken care of. It may have 50K miles but who knows what's wrong with it. I'm going to replace my motor for 3K. That's labor as everything. A brand new motor is the best way to go but rebuilding is 2x less and just as effective. If you go from 2.5 to 4.0 you have to swap your transmission and change the splines on your transfer case from 21 to 23 spline. Then you have to have new motor mounts. So by the end of the bigger motor swap, you'll spend more than 3K.

possible used sources
"While some believe there were no cars made with this engine, a very small number of early Eagle Premiers - modified Renault Medallions - were built with the 2.5 in 1988 and possibly 1989. However, most found their way into the CJ7/Wrangler, AMC Eagle, Cherokee, Comanche, and Dakota."

At our u pull it Dakota and Cherokee probably best bet to find one

Under 1K plus core sounds like a reasonable deal
no experience with which rebuilders are better

Ended up picking up an entire 99 chassis with everything but the body and the radiator. So for the amount I was looking at for just an engine giving them the core I got almost a whole Jeep. The guy even threw in a new clutch still in the box!

Holy crap! There is nothing left of the piston, only the pin. What the hell happened?
Not sure WTF happened. Need to drop the oil pan still to find out what is in there... Doubt it will be pleasant. In the next week going to pull the lower half of the engine out and see what everything else looks like.
