I am working on my 97 tj and I have taken off the rear shocks. 2 bolts came right out, go figure the 2 hardest bolts wouldn't. I had to heat them and pull out with vice grips. Anyway does anyone know the size of these upper shock bolts on the rear? Sae or metric? they look like a 5/16-20 but ive never heard of such a bolt. I would like to convert theses over to stainless hardware. thanks for your time.

I would not use stainless. While it is "stronger" it will break before it bends. Stainless bolts should never be used for anything in the suspension. It simply is not safe. Use bolts of the appropriate grade, may be one grade harder at most. Always replace damaged, corroded bolts.

Best of luck

I put anti-seize on the rear upper bolts when I put them back in.

I think the ones on my '06 were metric, not sure about the '97.

As stated above, just take the good ones to the HW store.
