Hello,

Have a 98 TJ 4.0 PLEASE HELP?

I'm a 21 year old college student in Dallas,Texas that's needs help with a clogged coolant system. The shop wants $2400.00 to replace the whole coolant system.
They don't want to try top flush it out.

Can anyone help me solve this problem without costing me a small fortune?
PLEASE?

Also my differential is growling and needs work. They want $3400.00 to replace that?

PLEASE Dallas Jeepers , can anyone help save me the huge expense this shop wants to charge me???????????

Major rip off. Find a new shop or are you willing to try and do it yourself.

The cooling system is potentially a do it yourself project. The axle probably not

What exactly is clogged in the system?

What were the symptoms that prompted the visit to the shop?

Do you know the mechanical or maintenance history of the vehicle?

I just flushed a Jeep cooling system today, super easy. What do you mean by clogged? What are your symptoms? I've seen some horrific, muddy, rusty Jeep coolant before but nothing you can't flush out with a garden hose and shop air.

Nobody likes replacing a Heater Core. That's why that $2,400 price tag is so high.

Differential is growling. Do you know which differential? Front or Rear?

They told me the heater core is completely clogged.
If that's so why don't I have a hot car?
Doesn't the water cycle through the whole system?

They just didn't want to take the time to flush the coolant system.

The water is rusty. Had a new radiator put in a year or so ago, but the guy never flushed the system.
So the water is very rusty.
Shouldn't I be able to flush the lines and clean it up?
Even put in the treatment to help and clear it.

You can replace an entire cooling system for $500 +/-. That includes a water pump, radiator, hoses, thermostat and housing. Those guys are trying to take advantage of you.


If its just a clogged core, flush the system with a hose. Pull both lines that go into the fire wall and flush water in both directions until it begins to run clear.

You may not want to help out a local person in need but I'd be willing to bet that there are plenty of people near her in a local club or just friendly jeepers that would be willing to assist her and offer her advise on the repair. Check for facebook groups or local jeep clubs. I see all the time here where they will have a wrenching party and you can just show up and someone can help you and even loan tools. No, they don't want to do it all for you but they are willing to help out if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.

I'm not looking for free help, just someone to give me a fair price on the work needing to be done.

I've found it and have it scheduled, so the local Dallas forum has resolved my problem.

If you go to LSJC.com they are a local family oriented club who are always willing to help. (Lone Star Jeep Club) they have helped me immensely!!

Emily, welcome to this forum, you'll find a wealth of information and guidance here, even the odd joker like me. I usually come here for help or fun, but youtube usually helps a lot as well due to the videos.

This is actually my grandpa's "coachee" site. He thought I would get some much needed assistance here. He's in CA. so he couldn't help except to find a shop to fix the problems.

It worked and thanks forum. All of you with your suggestions.

No. The coolant fluid does not flow through the heater constantly. there is a vacuum valve that controls the flow to the heater core. If the heater core is clogged, then chances of a core leak are imminent. This will need to be replaced also. Does your Jeep have A/C?

Not correct. There is NO vacuum controlled valve on a '98 TJ. Maybe the later models were different. The coolant DOES flow thru the heater core constantly. I added a manual in-line shut off with a cable on mine for the super hot days to assist with the AC cooling. If I ever study the vacuum lines for the climate control, I could probably figure out which one to tap into to add a vacuum valve instead like most OEM do.

That is not correct.
The coolant does in fact flow through the core all the time. There is no valve on the 98 4.0.

I’m going to assume that your engine was overheating which took you to the shop. You’ve received plenty of good advice from others and that price to flush a radiator is criminal. Changing the radiator core is 4 bolts, two hoses and a couple of clamps if it even needs to be replaced, which I question.

To be clear flushing your radiator will clear the system up but one feature you may find is clogged is the water hose supply line to and from the heater core which prevents proper circulation. With the engine cold and turned off disconnect the two heater rubber hoses and flush through the heater core and hoses. It’s a very simple job and be sure you capture the antifreeze with a pan so you can keep it off the ground and dispose of it properly.

As for the differential you will need to give us a bit more information as to what problem does it seem you are encountering which has you wanting to repair or replace it.
