My 2015 JKUR is due for new rubber.

Currently has the original set of Mud Terrain. I believe the size is 255/75/17 (32 in ?).

The rims are original Rubicon rims.

In addition right after buying the JK i had a Rough Country lift installed. it is the RGH 656 per my receipt. Looks to be a 2 or 2.5 inch lift per web search Height not on receipt. Shocks etc are stock.

I am getting all kinds of information and misinformation so I thought it best to ask here.

How much bigger (taller) a tire can I get without any issues with rubbing? I would like to keep the stock 17 in rims but not sure if a bigger tire on 17 in rims would look odd.

"bigger" tires for both looks as well as some increased clearance off road. I've been high centered twice and it sucks.

Can I fit 35s?

What about a wider tire such as say a 275 or 285?

I have seen quite a few jeeps where the tires stick out from the fenders. I'm not a huge fan but if it gives me better traction off road I would consider.

What do i look for as far as so called back spacing? i am clueless about this concept.

I do NOT want to start cutting into my fenders.

Lastly if I go with a bigger tire can I keep my original spare and use in a pinch for short distance or is this simply a very bad idea?

Most shops will not mount a 35 inch tire to a stock wheel because it is out of manufacturer specs. The wheel is too narrow. Some shops will do it anyways. A 315/70r17 is basically the same size as a 35x12.50 and some of them can be mounted on a stock wheel. Both of these sizes will require wheel spacers to avoid rubbing when you turn. Both sizes will also stick out beyond your fender flares.

A 285/70r17 can be mounted to a stock wheel, however once again spacers will be needed. They will stick out about an inch less than the above sizes.

With solid axles your spare should be the same size as the other tires.

35 12.50 17’s will fit fine on the stock rims, you will have to buy wheels spacers to prevent rubbing issues when turning. Rough country has a lot of different lifts and I’m not 100% sure what all was included with yours. If you have bump stop extensions then you will be fine with not hitting the fenders, if you don’t then the 35 will likely hit the fender at full stuff.
I always recommend a full size spare on a solid axle, your differential should be able to compensate for the different tire size because it acts as an open carrier if you run different sizes on the same axle but your abs sensors will likely think one tire is slipping and start going a little wonky and may send you into limp mode. Additionally, a spare tire and inexpensive spare tire carrier is going to run about 500 bucks, if you were to mess up your diff then the repair is going to typically be at least double that.
If you want to run a 35 then the tires will have to stick out some, 33’s (285 70 17’s) also typically rub at full lock without spacers on factory wheels.
If you do go with 35’s I highly recommend getting a proper spare tire carrier. I have had quite a few jk’s in the shop bad tailgate hinges and broken spot welds in the tailgate because the owner ran an extension to fit the spare instead of a quality aftermarket carrier.

So the above posts further confuse me. Carlton says not spec to install 35 on stock wheels while jrussblues seems to say it will work.

RE: spacers. A quick search shows sites who recommend to not use spacers but rather get proper wheel tire combo yet others say spacers are just fine.

'l talk to my tire guy today but likely he will want to upsell me a set of wheels.

I cannot find a clear cut answer.

Maybe there is no clear cut answer.

I just want to be safe on and off road!!

35x12.50 is out of spec with a stock wheel. The wheel is too narrow. Most shops will not install them. Can you find a shop that will? Most likely. The stock wheel is 7.5 inches wide and a 12.50 inch wide tire calls for a wheel of 8.5 or more.

Spacers are safe and fine as long as you go with a quality brand like Spidertrax or Synergy. Don't buy cheap ebay spacers. They also need to be installed correctly by removing the rotor retainer clips, using loctite, and proper torque.

I have used spacers with 38 and 40 inch tires on multiple jeeps with no issues.

If you want to keep your stock wheels and have a 35”-ish tire, look at some 285/75/17’s.
The shops will not have an issue with installation.
As for spacers, I have run Spidertrax on my Jeep for over two years and they have never let me down. I check them religiously at every oil change, when I rotate my tires. They have never loosened up.
