Hippy, get rid of your 3.73s and go with 4.88s or be smart and put your money into an 8.8 with 4.88s and a locker of some sort. I re-geared this summer after my lift and 33s and now I'm kicking myself for not doing an rear axel swap instead of re-gearing my d35. On the bight side, the deeper gearing is waaaaay better than the stock gears, drivability is much better and 4-h&low is a monster. Also when you do re-gear it is much better on your tranny. No more constantly shifting in and out of gear etc. Weigh your options when considering your d35, how much it will cost as opposed to how much would it cost to find an explorer rear end, gear it, and have it set up for your tj.

Your first post says your Wrangler is an SE which comes with the 2.5L four-banger engine. So based on the above follow-on post, is it actually a Sport that comes with the 4.0L engine and not an SE model as you first said you have?

I ask because the right ratio recommendation depends on which engine and transmission you have.

Count how many spark plugs your engine has, four or six. An SE comes with a four-banger, perhaps you were only told it has a straight-six?

If I"m not mistaken in 05 and 06 the 4.0 6cyl was an option for the se.

That 272 simply means your transfer case has the normal 2.72:1 4Lo ratio. Based on that 4.0L engine confirmation, go straight to 4.56 gearing which is ideal for 33" tires, 5-speed transmission, and your 4.0L engine. :)

Your axle should have a steel tag on it with the axle's ratio embossed into it.

The tag in the below photo indicates the axle has 3.73 gears inside.

Whoops sorry, I confused you with someone else. Yes for your 4-speed automatic transmission, you need 4.88 gearing for 33" tires. 4.56 would only be appropriate for 33" tires and the 4.0L engine with a 5-speed manual transmission.
