Pretty sure the only original parts is the dana 35/30 the jeep came with. Im new so bear with me and if in wrong forum please let me know so I dont do it twice. I did a search and found a lot of info. But still unsure what I have.



I have a straight six cylinder, w/carb motor. 5 Speed transmission. I wrote down a bunch of numbers but they dont jive with list. I am thinking AMC motor at this point. Numbers on transmission say Peugeot which is again foreign to me.


I hope to have some mods done on motor later and need to be sure what I have so I order the right parts.



Where and what number off engine block?



While Im here, is the Peugeot transmission any good. Seems to be best of both worlds on chart.


I just ride trails and upgraded to get over small rocks and getting across dry washes and such to explore. But want to have a strong jeep. Have a webber carb and such parts im putting on now.



I also am looking at cooling as it seems to be a problem. I just dont know what I got. Lot of good parts in jeep when I bought it.

The Peugeot transmission is a BA10.
When they break, no one repairs them. They get replaced by an AX15 transmission.

The Weber is an aftermarket carb that your PO installed because he couldn't figure out how to repair the stock Carter BBD carb.

Find a post by Got it at last. Look in his signature for a link to several Jeep manuals.
Read through the General Information section of the manual that most closely matches your Jeep. Hopefully you'll find your answers there.

I have the BA/10 in my 89, as well as the 4.2, which I personally like due to the amount of things I can do myself. L.M. is correct on the trans though, if you baby it, it will do fine, If you beat up on it I'd start saving for the inevitable AX-15 swap.

With a Webber Carb, the PO has already been playing under the hood, so you will need to be pretty specific with your questions.

With the cooling system, a complete system flush is a good first step, a lot will depend on previous care given by the owner, if it has sat unused for a spell you will be in for a bit of preventative maintenance to get up to par. If you have to replace anything, it's a good time to do everything. Water pump, Fan Clutch Tstat, hoses. You may just need a new Fan clutch. One important note to remember, Depending on whether you have a single serpentine or dual v-belts predicates which way your water pump rotates and there is a different for each.

Thanks Lucky Mac, I have not put the webber carb on yet as I wanted more low end power. The stock carb has no choke hooked up but somehow it drives and runs even when cold. That worries me. I really need to take pictures and will with my upcoming post. The 12v wire to the choke does not exist. I have hooked power up to choke on stock carb and it does nothing. Did find a vacum leak and while idle went lower the response was much quicker at the carb. I will download and read those manuals as the Haynes I have apply to stock vehicles. Imagine if you will a empty engine bay with just a motor in it. No frills just all mechanical pure power. Now I want to keep it running and tighten up the hot mess of wires and some upgrade.



When and if the tranny goes I will just get the transfer upgraded also. I am looking at those andy driveshafts, please forgive my lack of terminology. Just want to upgrade and toughen up the rest of suspension also.



Its not taking long to see what needs replaced lol. Man Jeeps are hard on the pocket book. Parts are cheap enough and easy to work on but weak stuff just keeps breaking.

Hi GITL, I do need to be specific and will get there. As mentioned earlier I picked up the webber myself as I have read nothing but bad things about the stock carbs. But happy with the power I have now so webber sets in it box. I suspect the jeep sat for years in a garage. As I took the temperature sensor out of the head/intake brown goo came out but the radiator had new antifreeze. Everything is like that on the jeep. Brake feel apart in my hands, brake fluid was contaminated. Dash gauges had to be taken out and electrical connections clean. RPM gauge works off ecm that doesnt exist anymore so Ill try off distributor. Still have not got the water temp gauge to work yet lol. That is a must here in the desert before I drive it off road.



The PO did put a lot of new parts in and my only concern is new paint is not covering up any problems I havent found. Love this little jeep and already looking a newer jeep in the future. Im not concerned with flex or how deep a puddle I can go through as it would require more money than the jeep is worth to do. I do trails that require more than my old S10 could do. I can see now why this is the number one site I get when I google.

Oh man you saved me a new engine. Thermostat was froze shut and fluid was brown behind the new green antifreeze that wasnt flowing lol. Going through everything.
