New radio install

1370 Views 21 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  n3tfury
Looking at replacing the factory CD/radio in my ‘15 JKU Sport with a touch screen style radio (Apple CarPlay/BT). The unit I’m considering indicates that it needs a wired connection to the parking brake. My JK is a manual (which is why I need wireless CarPlay since I’m busy shifting all the time in city traffic). What is the parking brake requirement all about? Anyone have any experience with aftermarket radio installs requiring this?

Usually that means the radio can display video. In order to display video, the parking brake must be on (so the radio knows you are not moving)
Some radio's can work by just grounding the wire to the parking brake, some need a bypass module (like the Pioneer units).
Look at PAC and Maestro units. They provide a parking brake signal and do the rest of the Jeep to radio translations.

I know that Alpine head units require a parking brake signal. Alpine restricts the ability to change many of the settings unless the parking brake is on.

What radio are you looking at? The reason I ask is that some are compatible with Maestro interfaces and others are not. As mentioned, Maestro is the easiest solution to an aftermarket install.

From Crutchfield.

Boss Audio BE920WCPA

Price is a consideration as I’ve got plenty I want to spend on lift, tires/wheels, bumpers……and, just figuring out how to deal with the CEL.

I need a screen with large buttons….

However, I just thought about the buttons on the back of the steering wheel. The stock radio now is quite basic. No BT, just an aux port, AM/FM and a disk player. Yeah, gotta go….

I don't believe that is compatible with a Maestro interface. You'll have to come up with all of the required connections (or research how to bypass the parking brake), forfeit steering wheel controls.

If it were my money I'd look into Pioneer double-DINs, some of which are within $100 of the Boss unit.
If I’d take off my requirements for Apple CarPlay, my options open up pretty wide. Are all Pioneer double dins compatible with the Maestro thingy?

My Kenwood required a wire to the parking brake so the NAV would work (destination changed) while the vehicle is moving.
What is your budget? Most of the Maestro compatible head units will have carplay. It's the nicer of the 2 translator options. PAC is the other, but it requires you to do some wiring and you may lose fade control, depending on your setup. You can hop on Crutchfield and look at options.

I don't believe all are compatible. If you are searching on Crutchfield, it should show in the listed specs somewhere.
If you want Carplay and are on a budget consider one of the no name Android units made especially for JK's on amazon. They are plug and play , work with steering wheel controls, and come with everything you need to be up and running in under an hour start to finish, I've installed several in different JKs and have been very happy with the overall value.

I went with a Pioneer. Did a lot of research and was able to get this parking brake bypass to add to the install.

I did the same when I had my Pioneer AVH. It worked perfectly.

Different experience here. I know 3 people that have 3 different Android HU's and none of them are happy with them. Between freezing, lag, and other quirks they have been a headache. YMMV.
I run a 10.1 Android currently (Secaine) and in my old Ram pickup had one. In the Ram, the radio wasn't all that good (back in Android 4 days) but the rest of the unit worked well. In my JK, I have only had it shut down once and I suspect it was due to a bad connection that I made. Shortly after that, I redid the wiring and have not had any issues since.

I installed them in 2 different jeeps last summer that i use regularly still and they have been very reliable. Biggest issue i have is the wireless carplay disconnects from my phone on occasion but i assume that's more of a CarPlay issue, and even that isn't that big a deal. I'm not saying they are the greatest head units out there, but i am saying for less than $250 ( even with the extended warranty) they are a great value.
I want them to be good. Kind of waiting it out for something a bit more stable. Android OS make sense in an HU.
