Hello, first off great site, I will be spending lots of my time here. I have owned and wheeled Cherokees for 3 years until now. I had a 92 Cherokee Limited that I used and abused through high school and it had soooooo many problems I decided to sell it while I could still get some money out of it.

Anyway, I was thinking a Grand Cherokee at first but I really wanted a Wrangler. I searched online and found nothing I could afford. I ended up finding one just down the road.
I found a 95 Wrangler that has approx 135,000miles 4cyl 5sp, no top, cracked windshield, very little rust, runs great, shifts ok has a D35C rear end. I ended up talking the guy down to $1000
I will post pics tomorrow, but how do you think I did?
Also quick question, can I run 31"s on a stock 95 YJ?

Oh, and are there any common problems to look for on 95 YJ's or wranglers in general, I am so used to Cherokee problems I feel like I am starting over all new.

I ran 31 BFG Mud Terrains on mine for a couple of years before I put on the lift. They will rub on the flares a bit and you will need to adjust the steering stops to keep the tires from rubbing on the leaf springs. The flares can be trimmed with a utility knife to clear the tires.

Well, when I sold my Cherokee I agreed to sell it for cheaper if I got to keep the 31"s They are brand new just over 2 months old Firestone Destination A/T's
I really don't want to start trimming and cutting because that is how my Cheorkee went downhill, I want to do this Jeep right. I wonder if I could sell my 31"s and get some good 30"s or 235, 245's ect...?
Or I guess start to look for a susp/body lift

If you really want to you can go to advanced auto and get a shackle lift for your jeep for like 30 bucks front and back and you will be able to run the 31s, i did it for about 4 months with mine the i put a body lift on ann sat on top of the 31s

Is a shackle lift hard to do? I did a susp. lift on my Cherokee that took days but that was because every bolt broke from rust.
Do you guys think a weekend wheeler needs a lift or would I be wise to just get the best 235's I can get because I plan to take this thing traveling once I do a full tune up.
If a shackle lift is fairly simple I may go that route because I already have the tires.

If you're going to run the 31's then yes you'll need the lift. Trust me....think long and hard. I started with a 2-1/2" suspension lift and 31's. Now convinced I want to go to 33"s and a 4-1/2" suspension lift, SYE, and new driveline.

A shackle lift is very simple. You and a couple of buddies can easily do it in a couple of hours even with goofing off and making wise cracks. It is just replacing the front and rear shackles with longer ones and putting the leaf springs back into the brackets. I recommend you repalce the leaf spring bolts when you do the shackle lift. I did the shackle lift on my previous wrangler. It was an '89 YJ. I did some reading online and was able to do the shackle lift alone without help. Search online, there's someone had a technique with a bottle jack between the leaf and frame I think it was. That worked for the fronts. I think on the rears I used a long piece of square tube steel as a pry bar to set those up. Even by myself I'm pretty sure it was done in less than 2 hours. Just be carefull. Stored energy in a spring vs skin and bones... you KNOW who's gonna win if they collide with each other.

When I get home, I can access my photobucket page and there's pics there of the shackles installed.

they say a longer shackle will help flex the leaf spring in a better position when off roading just dont go with a really long shackle it will flattin your springs too much but you will be able to run 31s and they are simple to do, go for it

the only thimg is the rear shackle bolt head will hit your gas tank skid plate so you might have to cut the old ones off with a sawzall

their easy to install just jack the thing up so that the tires are off the ground the biggest prob is the top shackle bolt u either get to drop the tank or cut the bolt either way when u reinstall the shackle make sure that u put it in the reverse way to take care of it for future cases were u need to take it apart

If I don't want to regear, can I still run 31"s?
Will I lose much power? Or mpg?
I was only getting about 9mpg in my Cherokee(lots of problems) I was kind of looking forward to better mpg. These are just some things I have been thinking about before I try to run these 31"s
