Hi people I just bought a 1987 Jeep Wrangler and I have a question: I want to lift 4". Right now the Jeep has 31" tires. Can I keep the tires or I need to buy bigger tires?

Need? No, you don't need to.
Want? Most likely. I'm guessing you're already planning 35" tires, just as soon as you knock over that gas station. (note: your method of raising money may differ).

A 4" lift is high enough to get into the "spiral of potential problems." Start planning!

4" Rough Country lift with 31s. I personally like the look. I think 33s would look better, but I have these tires I will run out first. When going to 33s you may also look into re-gearing. Another advantage of 31s with a 4" lift is you can have a little more articulation before fender rub. Good luck with your choices. And lets see some pics.

What you mean by that?

Actually is in the renovation process, I just replaced the radiator and have to take care of and oil leak then is going for a paint job. As soon as I find out how to post pictures I’ll show the Jeep. I bought this jeep cheap but I’ll have to put some money into it.

the start of the never ending process when u go that high u have drivetrain issues like transfer case drops limited yoke slips cv joint driveshafts things that when u look at the lift and go thats easy tend to sneak up and bit u in the a$$ and cost more money so the morral of the story is always do the research and then triple check it

Then let me do the renovation work and later will decide to lift or not to lift...lol

Sure, but dont' let us scare you away from a bigger lift. Lots of people do them, lots of people love them.

It's just worth knowing that it's not just bigger springs. It's all the stuff Morphius added. But if you want to do it, go for it! There are some really smart people on this board who can help you sort it all out. (not me. I mostly stick to smart ass photographs.)

What about "BODY LIFT KITS"?. They come in 1", 2" and 3",s. Off course, I know I still need to replace the Leaf Springs and shocks, but what are your opinions. I'm also a little bit confused about tires/rim size, my tires are 31"x10.50"x15LT so is the rim 15"x10"?

unless they are stock rims??
most are 7 inch some are 8s

Do they rub now?
some start with a shackel lift

Body lift kits are an inexpensive way to get a bit more room for your bigger tires. The advantages are price and simplicity: because you're just lifting the body, all the driveline stuff stays the same. The disadvantages are lack of flex (a good kit will increase your flexibility in tough stuff). Also with the 3" lift, you start getting weird looking and you will get complications with radiators, shifters and other things. You do NOT need to replace the springs and shocks with a moderate body lift.

It's very common for people to do a spring lift of some sort, AND a small body lift. I have a 1" body lift. Most people will steer you away from any body lift over 2 inches.

Tire sizes do not tell you the width of your wheels, since you can use the same tire on different widths. So you have 31" tall tire that is 10.5" wide with a 15" wheel "hole." The trend now is to have fairly narrow wheels, and let the tire bulge out from the wheel more. There are pluses and minuses to that, but it's not a big deal. Most likely you will not need to change your wheels unless you want to.

You might want to consider a quality 3" spring lift and a 1" body lift to get your 4 inches of lift. It's frequently a good compromise for price.

Also check out the threads on people who cut their fenders - it's called a "virtual lift." The idea is to remove sheet metal so you can fit big tires, but avoid lifts. It keeps your driveline and steering closer to stock, keeps your center of gravity lower, yet lets you run big tires. There's a recent post of a guy here who cut his fenders - did a real nice job.

Well I don't know. I'm not driving the Jeep too much because of the oil leak which I'll get fixed this weekend, but it's too bumpy. I need new shocks and leaf springs.

Oh, well sure. It's a an 87 Wrangler. It likely needs new shocks and springs. Try to tough it out until you decide what you're going to do lift-wise. You wouldn't be the first person to buy replacement parts and then decide you don't need them, but it's nice to skip that expensive step.

It takes some guts and fabrication skills to take an angle grinder to your Jeep though. I wouldn't do it myself, actually.

Hey [email protected], thanks for your advise and comments. I definitely going to do the lift (ROUGH COUNTRY® 4" COMPLETE SUSPENSION LIFT from JCWhitney on sale for $404.09 Item#ZX311296FE) and I'll replace the flares with a nice option from Rugged Ridge 7" Fender Flare Set at Quadratec Part No: 12510.501
Then slowly do the bushings (Daystar Master Bushing Set with 15/16" Swaybar Bushings in Red for 87-95 Jeep® Wrangler YJ) also from Quadratec.

Gilcano, when you purchase the RC lift, you may want to also order the new axle U-bolts and replacement leaf spring bolts. An 87 will have a lot of wear and tear on the originals. Only a few bucks more and a lot of peace of mind.

Thanks for the tip Turdhurdler, yeah they are only 28.99. Now I went to a specialized “SPRING & SUSPENSION” place and the guy told me they can re-arch the leaf springs and of course replace all the “U” bolts and shackles. He also told me they can lift the Jeep right there, but He is talking about 27” in the front and 30” in the back. Is He talking about the height from the floor to the bottom of the Jeep?

nice jeep the re arch is a good idea heard of it done before and heard good reviews probably wont give u the same lift a 4 inch rc would though but my question is if he goes that big wont he need a transfer case drop and a slip yoke eliminator

You're asking me? Remember, I'm new with Wranglers. I'm reading and reserching a lot but I need some advice about this, like I said before: I'll do the renovation first and then the lift but I need to get all the information. All your comments will be appreciated.

Don't get too carried away with the sway bar bushings. Myself and many others here have done away with the sway bar and track bars on our JEEPs. Your driving style and personal preferance may differ. I would try eliminating both the sway bar and trac bars when you put on the lift. If you don't like how it drives then you can put them back on.
