I just bought a 90 YJ and noticed that it is very hard to change the gears while at a stop. When I came to a complete stop the clutch went all the way to the floor. I pulled over and checked the fluid there is none in it My first question is what kind of fluid do I need to put in it? the second question is that if the fluid leaked out and it made a burning smell could it have broken the pressure plate? Let me know what you guys think ASAP I am anxious to get the vehicle back on the road. The smell, lack of fluid and the fact that the clutch goes all the way to the floor and doesnt engage at all scares me!! Would it be fluid? pressure plate? or a whole clutch set up

I say you replace the whole clutch assembly ASAP, otherwise you're pretty boned. I hope you have AAA.

What kind of clutch set up should I get? where should I get it from? The guy I bought it from says that the transmission is brand new so I guess I just need a clutch, pressure plate, flywheel? what else? do you have any suggestions on brands? websites? is ebay a stupid mistake?

I've never used eGay...I stick with Quadratec. They don't claim to know much, if anything about Jeeps, but they have a great selection.

The part number for a clutch is 52002.2XX
Just specify the year, model and engine you have. This is for the Centerforce I clutch kit. It's better than a stock replacement, without draining your bank account...its less than $300

Call your local autoparts store for a new flywheel, it should run you about $100. The one for my '87 with the I6 was $92.

What parts do you think I need? Slave cylinder? master cylinder? pressure plate? pivot? fork? throwout lever? hydrolic control unit? plate, disc, and control unit? flywheel? or all of the above?

With what you're saying in your first post, I'd personally replace all of the above.

Unless you have a lift and a plethora of tools at your disposal, I'd take it to a trans shop, preferably one that has some experience with Jeeps. You live in Alaska, so the shop rates are probably around $40-$50 an hour, possibly more. A normal shop can pull a trans and replace the clutch and flywheel in about 6 hours or so, or at least I could.

At this rate, with all you need, you are probably looking at close to $1300.

A clutch kit comes with everything you need and you can pick one up from NAPA or another parts store for around $150.

The first rule of Jeep, if you need to replace a part, use a part that is superior to stock. Stock applications will only fail again.

Nothing wrong with the stock clutch set up. Better than some aftermarket clutches. You can do it yourself withwith out a lift and average tools.

this is close to a yj same tranny.

Its not going to cost 1200.00 or 1300.00 dollars. thats crazy. A good shop cand do job like this for somewhere around 700.00 or 800.00 4 hours labor. make sure you have your flywheel turned or replace it depending on your budget.

Well if you checked your fluid and it's empty than one of two things.You have a leaky clutch master or a leaky slave.99% chance it's the slave.If it's the slave (i'd put money on it)then you gotta drop the trans.Definitely a good time for a clutch.You can do this job yourself.Time and patience.A basic tool box will get it done.The only tool that's "off the wall" may be the clutch alignment tool.Spend a couple hundred bucks, get your stuff , and do it yourself and save a bundle.And if you still feel it necessary to spend that much money,go out and get someth'n cool for the jeep.

It sounds like your hydralic master cylinder is shot. Your clutch is probably fine. Depending on your year this may be a simple fix. I have a 1994. On this year and newer you just replace the whole master and slave as they are a sealed unit. You can get it from the dealer for about $200.00. No need to pull the trans as it is bolt on. 2 bolts at the firewall and 2 at the trans. And then you have to take it off the clutch peddal. It has a pin.

If its an older model that has a hydralic throughout bearing, then the trans will have to be pulled. But on this year you can actually refill and bleed the system at the trans. On the newer models you can't. I have replaced mine 3-4 times since 1994.

if you have a 90 than you have an internal slave unit so if you gotta replace it than you have to pull the trans, a little c-clip on a pin holds it on just pop it off disconnect the lines and yank it out, slide new one on and re-connect and go. stock clutch is fine unless you have done a bit of engine work. i didn't replace my flywheel but i am cheap so that is your call. you'll need a swivel socket head too and a long extension to get to the top two bell housing bolts. its really really easy to do. good luck
