Hi all. Just purchased a new leftover 2017 2-door Sahara in Firecracker Red. Has some nice add-on options (remote start, LED headlights, etc) but the "130n" head unit is junk IMO.

I did upgrade the soundbar speakers to the Mopar Kickers, but would like to get a full display DVD head unit that functions better, is as much "plug n' play" as possible, and retains all the steering wheel controls and phone functions. I have a Sirius trial, but don't really care about retaining it. I can always stream it or Pandora from my Phone.

I have seen the 430n MyGig units available for around $300 in new condition, but figure there must be better products from Pioneer, Kenwood, etc for the same price or less.

Any suggestions for HU's that meet the above criteria would be appreciated!

You've got the right idea, Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine....all good. What it will likely come down to is the ergonomic differences once you figure out the core features.


Crutchfield is a good resource to run comparisons to figure out which models have the most appeal to you. Then go try to see as many of these in person before making a decision. I had originally set my mind on a Kenwood head unit but didn't like the layout and GUI in person. I was able to try a Pioneer at Best Buy and thought it was layed out better for the functionality. So this is why you need to try and get some hands on time if you can before buying.

My problem with the multitude of online choices (even Crutchfield) is that there aren't a lot of definitive explanations about the steering wheel control functionality, how the phone call/bluetooth integrates...or it states additional components are required.

My last car was a Mustang, and I was really aggravated when I upgraded to a DVD screen HU about all the additional connections/adapters/dash panel etc. I had to install. It was a PITA. That's why I'm even considering the OEM 430n unit even though it is probably not going to be as good as an aftermarket model.

So I guess I'm really just looking for two or three specific recommendations of units that other Wrangler owners have for me to compare -- ones that are as "plug and play" with the Wrangler as possible, retain all controls, and preferably are in the under-$300 range. I'm not much of an audiophile anymore, I listen to sports radio as much as anything else these days, I don't need a sub or amp... so getting all those things together is the primary goal.

Steering wheel controls will be handled by a Maestro box. This will come up as an installation option when you look through the stuff on Crutchfield.



I don't have any specific recommendations other than I put a Pioneer 4200NEX in mine. That model has been discontinued.

I had a Pioneer 4100NEX in my Jk for several years, using the PAC adapters, I had proper Steering Wheel Controls and CAN functions. I now have a 10.1" Android from Seicane that also came with a CANBUS adapter. It's been flawless and easily retained the SWC's.

With a stock 130 and no Alpine upgrade, you can do just about anything and have great success.

The Seicane looks like a great option. I was able to pick up a very good condition 430 high speed for $48 that I'm going to try first though. Not sure if it will work, and I'll have to go to my Jeep dealer with the receipt of purchase to get them to unlock security I guess.

I also upgraded from my 430N head unit. I am an audio novice and crutch field made it so simple. I was on a budget and didn't want to spend $1000 for the alpine restyle. Ended up with the alpine ilx-207 which is the same head unit in the restyle that you can purchase without the fancy restyle package. It is awesome! The fit and finish is not as good, but I got an open box ilx-207 out the door with all harnesses to keep steering wheel controls for $500.

Very happy and install was not terrible for being a novice. Definitely go the crutchfield way they will wire up everything for you so its all just plug and play.
