I'm new here and I have a question -

I'm considering buyiung an 05 Wrangler (6-cyl manual) as a second vehicle.

I was able to sell this purchase to myself and my other half by saying:
1) Its a fun car in the summer and
2) Its 4 wheel drive for the winter.

But is this thing really any good in the snow?
Here in Connecticut we don't get snow like Colorado, Buffalo, etc. abut in the winter the roads are often covered.

Am I fooling myself if I think this thing is going to take me 32 miles to work in 6-12" of snow?

Thanks!

i bought my '04 unlimited in february and our area immediately got hit with a sleet storm that put a good 6-8 inches of that icy stuff on the roads. she handled beautifully in 4W High considering that stuff is a lot more slippery than snow. i even got to drive her into some plowed in areas where the snow was at least 16-20 inches and she did fine. you will be pleasantly surprised. just make sure you have some decent tires on when the white stuff comes around - mine came with some 31" BFG AT's.

This isn't my picture but we've done this on more than one occasion.

Jeeps are amazing in the snow.
They are not magic on ice, being short wheel base they can be a little squirrelly and have to be handled carefully but snow won't present much of a problem.

I think tires probably make a big difference.

This one has Goodyear Wranglers on it I believe , and they are bigger than the cheapo ones that some come with (which may or may not help in the snow) but I didn't not the actual size.

My second car now is a 98 Honda Accord and with Blizzaks the thing is awsome in the snow so long as it doesn't get too deep.
I need the Jeep to be at least that good in the snow.

And really, are *any* cars good on ice?

Hey look here!! I live in BUFFALO,NY....BUFF-A-LO.... The winters here are brutal and yet great for jeepers... We get county wide driving bans at least a couple times a winter. It's never stopped me or have I ever gotten stopped for driving my TJ. the only time I've gotten stuck is when I tried to drive through/over 5-6foot snow banks made by snow plows. All i'm running are BFG AT KO's 30x9.5 (I highly recommend too, Quiet and great in snow and mud) and No lift either.

From everyones response, you can tell that Jeeps have no problem with the white stuff. :) Best of luck to you, and welcome to the board!

with good tires: snow, good... ice and slush, not so great. then again, sorta like someone above said, what cars, except Zamboni's, are good on ice...

What kind of tires are you running?

In general, what are "good" tires in the snow?
As of right now i am running Kelly Safari AWR, 225/75 15r. this weekend i am picking up a set of Dunlop Mud Rovers 31"x10.5"(poor man swampers) the kelly's worked well but the tread is no more.

at that time my tj was fully stock riding on 30" tires (now i have 2" body lift)
i went into a parking with around 2 ft of snow. I opened the door the snow was above the steps so it was pretty high.. made a circle around the parking and went home lol :D I went in there to do donuts but the snow was just too much to slide sideways freely. No problem at all and it was pretty fun. :)

Yes, the most agile car I've ever driven on ice was a Subaru station wagon with siped tires.
