Good evening. I am in the market for my first Jeep. I am looking to spend anywhere from 3 to 10k, maybe more mabye less. I live in Atlanta and will not be off roading but would like to have a fun vehicle. Can anyone suggest what I should be looking for and potential problems with certain years (4cyl, 6 cyl, manual, auto, 4x4, 2x4, etc.)

I dont understand... you want to purchase a jeep but you do not want to go wheelin??? :eek: :eek: :eek:

We have 3 jeeps... 2005... 2004... and a 1979 CJ7 and we wheel all of them...

I could not own a jeep and not wheel... there is no fun in that.

Good luck with your purchase... I love my 2005 jeep but really love the CJ7...

you wrote this in the TJ section of the forum. so i think you already decided to buy a jeep TJ.

i would buy a 6cyl with auto tranny. all TJs have part time 4x4.

the biggest problem (in my opinion) of the TJ is rust. my old one was brown under it after only 3-4 years. but if it´s rust-protected there shouldn´t be a problem.

what do you want to do with your TJ? some offroading or only on road use?
do you want a modified jeep with bigger tires and a suspension lift or a stock one as a daily diver?

Yea,welcome to the forum.
I would definitely stick with a 6 cyl,especially if want to run bigger tires,etc. I have a 97 TJ,love it.I wouldn't give anything for my jeep.I have a 5-spd.I do like a 5 spd better though,but its up o you and what you plan on doing with it.

I had an 84 CJ,nice,but I had to work on it all the time.

Just keep an eye out in your local paper,or on the internet sites such as autotrader.com

ICE welcome to the forum and congrats on looking at buying one of the most capable vehicles out there. they are a blast. I have never owned another jeep so I cannot say weather the TJ is the best but I love mine. I have the 2.5L 4cyl and can go just about anywhere my friends can. as stated before what do you want to do with it? is it going to be a pavement princess or are you gonna actually use it like it was intended for. I love the 4 coil suspension and how simple the whole rig is. you will be very impressed with the ability of this little toy and how you will be able to keep up with the best of people. good luck on your search.

Welcome to the forum, you live in Atl. so I assume you will be doing some interstate driving, and I know how the traffic can be around here :mad: . That being said, I would go for the 6 cyl. Like fox said, off road a 4 cyl. can go pretty much anywhere and equally equipped 6 cyl. can go, but on the interstate, you will appreciate the extra 2 cyl. And eventhough I prefer a manual, in traffic around here and auto can be convienent, but keep in mind if it is a higher mileage vehicle, manuals are usually more reliable. Just my 2 cents.

off the road an auto tranny is unbeatable. on the road it´s much more comfortable. but thats only with the 4-spd auto tranny that came 2003 (???). the 3spd isn´t that good in my opinion.
very important is that an auto tranny is much better for the whole drivetrain.

i would make a test drive with a TJ with manual tranny and with a TJ with auto tranny, than you´ll see what´s the best for YOU...!!!

agreed ^^ I didn't think about that you guys have quite a bit of interstate over there, you are going to want the 6. and I think that on another thread awhile ago we established that they both get about the same gas milage. go with whatever is comfortable, while you are going to be stuck in traffic and an auto gives it more control off road, I still like my 5speed.

They couldn't have said it better. I personally like the manual tranny. I have the 6 speed 6 cyl. It's great both on and off road. I was able to crawl through the dirt with the best of em once I dropped pressure in my tires. Auto or Man is up to you. But go with the 6, in traffic you need it. Don't worry about trying to save fuel, you won't in either. As far as the rest of the Jeep, if you take care of it, it will go forever. But where you're at watch out for rust. Have fun, and don't forget to wave. :wavey:

I like the manual too.. its more fun. for offroading i think the auto might be better because of the torque converter so it wont be hard on the clutch as far as slipping it and stuff.

What??? they do? does driving on all four tires most of the time count?
I usually drive mine on two wheels ;) usually the left front and back tires since i turn fast when doing right turns and those are sharp :rofl:

owning a jeep is not just about wheeling...nothing wrong with not offroading a daily driver IMO...their are other great reasons to drive a jeep and it can be great fun without wheeling.

I gar-un-tee it's better on gas than that '64 Ford Galaxie 500 w/390 4bbl I had up until a couple of years ago!!! ;)

man.. Atl has traffic.. try CA traffic.. some parts of the bay staffic starts a block away from home.

Just for that reason is why I got an auto i6. I am surprised a 4liter feels sluggish. it is good to have max torque at 2500 rpm. I wish there was mid range Hp though.. Wonder if the new v6 feels better..

one thing though it keeps me out of tickets trying to save gas.. So far the jeep is fine after 3 days.. I wish I can put the top down though.. No softop for night time..

I plan on keeping it for a while.. first car I really finances.. other vehicle financed was a motorcycle..

get a 4.0l i cant imagine how sluggish the 2.5L would be.

try a 1996 dodge ram 2500 V10 manuel trans, while driving back and fourth about 35-40 min in traffic each way 5 days a week. talk about placing a hurt on the wallet :chair:

I think the 2.5 would feel faster because its more peaky so the difference will be bigger from low to high rpm while with a stock I6 the power curve is flat so it feels the same all across. Mine with my mods made my 4.0L peaky like a 4 banger just with a lot more power.

Mine is a 4 cyl. manual and it is fine as a daily driver but I wish I had held out for the 6 cyl. model. It just happened to be the deal I couldn't pass up. For a daily driver you will be happy no matter what. It is a fun ride and just remember if you ever do decide to do some off roading, you can! It's great to have options isn't it?

X2. I couldn't pass up a 98 4cyl 5speed with 79k for 5 grand. I was "racing" my friend with a 4.0 automatic and kept up with him pretty well (I was very suprised)
