My first post, newbie again! Great site. Ive searched but need a little help. I have a 98 Wrangler Sahara (with 3.73's I beleive?) and an automatic tranny. I just bought a 4" Super Lift and am planning on running 33/10.50s or 32/11.50s. I still want to be able to run it on the highway and also in the woods and still get as good a gas mileage as possible. Ive been told that 33's will eat my gas and greatly decrease power. I know 4:10s will give me more torque but will they help my gas mileage. How will they be on the highway? Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Now prepared to get flamed.

Well let me just welcome you, to this forum, and then say that the difference between the 3.73 to 4.10 is not noticeable, or worth the money to do. Your auto tranny will handle your tire choice very well, with your current gears. I have a close friend running the same, with 35" X 12.50 tires, eventually I am sure he will go with 4.56 gears, but for his daily commute, he says the difference is negligible.

Last comment, no flamming allowed, around these parts........:D
THANKS FOR THE QUICK REPLY. i THINK MY GEARS ARE 3:73, BUT I AM NOT 100 PERCENT SURE. ANYONE KNOW TIS FOR A FACT. DID THE SAHARA EVEN COME WITH DIFFERENT GEAR OPTIONS? aLSO, ANYONE HAVE THE SUPERLIFT. I BOUGHT IT VERY LIGHTLY USED AND ALL THE PARTS ARE THERE. 300 DOLLARS WITH ADJUSTABLE TRACK BAR. cAME OUT OF AN 05. jUST WORRIED IT MIGHT BE TO BIG FOR MY TASTE.
a buddy of mine has a 99 sahara, automatic, with 3.07 gears. So i dont think just becuase it is a sahara, its gonna come with 3.73. Check the tag on the diff cover, or better yet, call a any jeep dealer, and tell them ur VIN, they will tell u everything. nice seats by the way, i want them so bad!
mine came with 3.07's now I have 4.56 gears and lock front and rear after I had to change the rearend not all Sahara's had a dana44 I get 200 miles a tank full and drive 70 just fine but I was planning an going from a 33 to a 35 so I tell everyone before you do a gear change make sure you will stay with that tire
Oooh, thats not good. I guess that I assumed that I had 3:73s maybe not. I will call a jeep dealer tomorrow and find out. If they are 3:07 I should probably regear huh? What ratio? I wont be doing much rockcrawling. Just muddin, etc.. once in awhile. Most importantly i want enough power for the open road and the best gas mileage possible. Its a daily driver. Thanks for the info guys.
oh one more thing, how much does cost approximately to regear.
GEars are usually about $150-$200 depending on the make...

But if you do have a D44 and not a D35, you'll have 3.55's

'98 TJs did not come with 3.55, only the '97 TJ did. His '98 either has 3.07 or 3.73. :)

Typical total cost for parts and labor to regear both axles is around $1200 give or take a little depending on your local.

And look at the 9 o'clock position on your differential covers. There should be a steel tag held between two bolts that will have your ratio, 3.07 or 3.73, embossed into it. It may also say 3.74 as they come with a .01 ratio difference on the front and rear axles. :)
if you are staying with 33's then 4.10 -4.24 gears I get good pretty good gas mileage with 4.56 gears even on the highway doing 70
but with the expense of having someone else do your gears make sure you are going to stay with 33's
thanks for the info guys, My girlfriend has the jeep up in canada until tomorrow night so i will definately check tomorrow. Where is the best place to get gears, which brand? If I have the 3:07s can I get away without gearing for awhile, or would you recomend doing it right away with 33s. Sorry for so many quesions but all of your help is really appreciated.
Don't buy the gears on your own, buy them from the shop that installs them. If there are any problems after the installation, if you buy the parts from the installing shop, the installing shop will be responsible for everything including all parts and labor. If you supply the gears and anything goes wrong with the gears, the installing shop will blame the gears and the gear manufacturer will blame the installer. You'll then be responsible for getting the gears replaced under warranty and to add insult to injury, you'll have to pay the installer to remove the damaged gears and pay again to have them installed.
X2 on what Jerry said. Do some research, ask some people where they got their junk worked on. I'm in the middle of getting new gears and lockers installed right now by Arabia's Overkill here in San Jose. $3350 for parts & labor but what you may want to consider is if you are going to have lockers installed at a later time, if so then it's a good idea (money saver) to to them at the same time
I am desperately hopeing that I have 3:73s, because I really dont have the money to regear but would like to run 33s. I think a 4 inch lift will look pretty stupid with 32's. I do have access to 3" coils (BDS) but Im not sure that I could swap these with the 4s that come with the kit. Does anybody know if using the three inch coils would screw up anything with the 4" kit. This way I could run 32s and it might look pretty good. I turn my 31s with no problem so I think I could handle 32s all right. Any thought s on this. Asking a lot of questions but some of you must know what its like having this stuff make you crazy. Just want to do the right thing first. thanks again guys
you don't have to regear right away with 3.07 or 3.73 but with 3.07 you will notice the power isn't there but it'll be ok until you have the money to do the gear swap
and yukon gear from randys ring and pinion or dana spicer gears are the better gears if you have 3.07's you will need a carrier change for 4.10's

and I do my own gears but the shops around here charge $200 to $300 per axle and some use dana spicer gears and some use yukons

the gears will cost about $600-$700 for both front and rear with setup bearings and carriers

expect to pay $1200-$1300
My 99 Sahara came with 3.73's in the D44 and I run just fine on the road with my 35's on it even at 70 MPH(I do have an automatic). Given the 7% my speedo is off I'm even still pulling around 200 miles per tank.
I am definately going to look into it tonight. Does anyone know if I can use 3" springs with 4 inchlift components? Beleive it or not, I am thinking about using the 3s instead of the 4s even with 33s. I like the look better. Thanks again to all of you
