Hi all,

I'm very very interested in purchasing a TJ, probably in the '98 - '00 range based on what I've seen for the price range.

I'm new to four wheeling, but want to learn, especially now that I live in Utah.

For forum etiquette, is it reasonable for me to ask specific question about any listings that might come up that I'm interested in purchasing? All I really know now is that I need to look for a 6 cylinder it seems that having a dana 44 rear is desired. I'm also planning on a manual and hard top. That's about all I know.

I have a lot of experience turning a wrench on old Saabs and Volvos so I'm looking forward to doing things myself.

All advice welcome.

Go ahead and ask any questions you may have on upcoming listings you find, no problem. I would add '97 to your list as that is actually a very good year that having owned one for nearly 200K miles, would prefer to '98 to '00 for a few reasons.

Welcome :)

Ask away, take pics and post them. We are all here to help and there is a ton of knowledge by searching the forum (as you have found out).

I would look for the following. These are just my opinions though.

unmolested (stock)

Whats your budget? Do you want it for DD or Wheeling?

Minor stuff... like cam bolts on the front axle control arm mounts for caster/pinion angle adjustments that disappeared '98 or '99, a/c compressor location, and the ability to generate its own DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) that came back in, I believe, 2001.

great forum response

What a great forum group. I've missed being on a really responsive forum since my old Saab 900T days.

I'm looking for a daily driver, but I've also got my old '98 Volvo V70R to drive that I won't get rid of. That being said, I've got a short commute, don't need it for long drives on the highway, and I'm in Utah, so I really want to get it out on the trails. But I'm new to four wheeling, so I'm sure that it's an iterative process where as I become more capable I'll want to push it more.

As I stated, I'm leaning towards a manual tranny just because I miss it, but what are the advantages of the auto vs. manual (I'm trying to start a flame war)?

For $$, I'd rather be in the $6-8k range because it's easier to justify to the wife. Then I could spend $ on it as I go to upgrade.

In general autos are better for more extreme off roading and rock crawling. Manuals can work, but you will not be able to shift when you tranny is buried in mud without packing your clutch. To each their own.

Although i do not know much about the mechanics of a Jeep compared to a lot of the elite in this club i do know that now that i have 4.0 Litre I will never go back to a 2.5. I think a lot of people will share that opinion.
