So I picked up a '92 Wrangler a month ago. It ran good aside from a little exhaust and the infamous ticking noise. In the past month it's had all shocks replaced, new header to replace the cracked manifold (someone performed a horrible weld job on it previously that just spread to a 6" crack), all new plugs/wires, replaced torn grease boots and now the head is off for a valve job. I really wanted to dig into the ticking sound but was never able to pin point it with a stethoscope. There were no hard taps coming from the valve cover, there seemed to be a decent amount of noise coming from the oil pan, and a slightly louder tick coming from the bell housing. It's hard to tell because of the acoustics in the bell housing and oil pan. I dropped the oil pan the other day and didn't find any metal shavings or chunks. There seems to be no play in the crankshaft and the pistons looked good for having 200K miles. So my question is, how difficult is it to push the tranny back to check for loose bolts...or should I look in other areas while I have the engine in pieces? I really appreciate the helps ladys and gents.
