Some first time off roading questions.

Hey everyone was planning on going off roading soon and wanted some basic advice on using the 4wd and when is it recommended to be in which gear. I have an 06 TJ.

Terrain wise is just some simple mudding.

As far as Front and Rear AXLE LOCK goes, when do you think it is recommended to be used.

Don't have a winch on it yet, but some buddies of mine mentioned to either go with a chain or winch wire. In the case of getting stuck.

What do you guys recommend?

Thanks.

4 low or 4 high depending on the terrian. I usually go 4 low and then if I need I up shift to 4 high. Very seldom do I get out of 4 low where I wheel.

Nylon strap is what you need in case you get hung up. Chains are very dangerous under stress. Make sure you have proper recovery points front and back.

Congrats on having a TJ Rubi and welcome to WF..

First of for your safty and others.. Chains NO.. Winch line is for winching not for yanking on another vehlicle, So don't use winch line.. Get yourself a recovery strap with loop ends not the ones they sell with hook ends.. You can get a recorvery strap at any autoparts store or online..

As to when you use your lockers.. Depends on terrain difficulty and what tires you are running. Lift can play into that as well but only if your climbing over obstacles. Start off with out using the lockers.. Get a good feel for it.. Then Lock your rear up and spend some time with that.. I myself only lock up my front when I have to.. It's alot easier to turn without a locking your front..

Of course if your getting a feel for your jeep with out the lockers on and you get stuck or you get a "Hey I bet you cant make it through that"... Do the right thing and Lock it up and smile as your friends look at you in awe..

What gear depends on speed. Rockin through mud try 4wd hi or 2wd . See what works. Don't use chains to recover someone. If they break you've got heavy chains flying around. Get a recovery strap that has no metal on it. Other than that have fun and see what works

If you've got the right recovery strap and have someone to help you out, get stuck and them try the axle locks, you'll be a amazed at how much they help

Um, that would be backward. 4H most of the time, 4L when you can't do it in 4H.....

just a fyi...4H is for high speeds, say up to around 50mph or so and 4L is for low speeds. i usually dont go over 10mph in 4L.

^ sharky is right about the speeds.

Although the best way to look at using 4H v 4L is what terrain you are wheeling.. Rocks and trail ridding 4L. Snow and Sand 4H. Mud both work just fine.. On a locker note.. Remember that your lockers will only work in 4L unless you do the Rubicon Locker Mod.. There's a link around here somewhere but if you google "rubicon locker mod" the instructions to allow usage in 4H are there

for me personally I use 4H in mud unless I'm not touching the gas at all and only letting the 1st gear idle pull me through....if you use your gas pedal in mud, rpms can get pretty high real fast. even if you're only going 5mph your rpms could get over 3000 pretty easily, and in 4L that's no bueno.

I agree if the OP is going to do some mudding try 4hi first going to have more luck there, but try 4 lo too and see what works ! have some fun!
