My Jeep has a 4.0 in it with 130,000 miles. The guy that had it before me said he was having it changed at the Valvoline oil change place and that he had switched it to the high mileage oil. I've been changing it and using the Max Life Synthetic Blend figuring that is what they were putting in it when he had it changed. I just wanted to get others opinions on what intervals they are using? I like to change my oil at 3000 miles but with the synthetic blend I figure that may be overkill since pretty much all of my miles are highway. I was thinking more like 5000 miles.

5,000 should be fine. If you are worried, do an oil analysis :wavey:

3K oil change intervals were dreamed up by the quick change joints like JiffyLube to generate more $$$. Most of us are fine with 5K or even 7.5K intervals unless you are driving in dusty or other extreme conditions.

Dino and synthetic engine oils collect dirt, combustion byproducts, acids, etc. at exactly the same rate and conventional oil filters leave most of that in the oil. No conventional oil filter can filter out the combustion byproducts or acids that collect. So while it may be true that synthetic oil itself can last longer, that doesn't mean the oil doesn't get dirty at a slower rate. So at least in my world, I would change either type oil at the same interval. I would not and do not buy into the longer interval myths pushed by the proponents of synthetic engine oils for that reason... oil gets dirty at the same rate whether it is synthetic or mineral based. :)

I agree; the 3000-mile oil change myth is alive and well. Quickie oil change places came up with this as a part of their overall marketing strategy. I do not agree with their marketing plan, nor do I use their services.

I always recommend following Jeep's own recommendations as set forth in their owner's manual. For my '05 TJL, Jeep recommends using 10w30 (for my cllimate range) and changing it at 3k intervals, so that's what I do.

Yours may recommend differently. Check your owner's manual if unsure. Dismissing lubrication specs from powertrain engineers to save a buck is not my style.

If I am switching from the Synthetic that the PO had been using to a conventional oil, do i need to do anything specific besides just a regular ole oil change. I have used conventional the whole time I've been driving in my previous cars so I know nothing about synthetics and am not concerned about their longer life because IMO oil getting dirty is more of a worry than it breaking down especially because where i live has a dusty rock road.

Nope just a normal oil and filter change is all you need. Just make sure you get yourself a good oil filter that is the key. Stay away from FRAM or other big-box store discounted brands. FRAM isn't what it used to be and a lot of people have problems with them. I like WIX myself.

oil gets dirty at the same rate whether it is synthetic or mineral based. :)

Dirty oil is not really (usually) the reason you change oil, it's breakdown and engine wear. I used to all the time and occasionally still have my oil tested and no where in the result said anything about dirt, or at least it being above accepted norms. The test results talked about ppm of metals and other internal engine components and breakdown. Being that synthetic is much slicker than dino oil, there is much less PPM metal and such. And synthetics breakdown at a far higher temp and longevity than dino oils, thus they last longer.

In my Ford Superduty 5.4l I would be at 7500 or 8000 miles and have my oil tested. The testing company (ever hear or Schaffer Oil?, they sell to large comapanies and farmers, construction companies, ect) and the test said to go longer, up to 10,000. I usually chickened out at that point and never really went past that. They truck just passed 195,000 miles with no engine problems (I guess It will blow tomorrow, now that I said that).

Some people say that when you switch to synthetic from dino, you can't go back, but I have no idea if that is true or just a bunch of crap. I do know most arguements that state you shouldn't start a brand new engine with synthetic have been debunked as most high end cars and even others are now coming brand new with synthetic from the factory.

That's about all I know about oil, except warming it in the microwave before "bedtime" is a good idea.

And as far a filters, I can't remember the last time I used anything other than NAPA gold. Always seems to test fine for me.

That's an interesting bit of data. I suppose the moral of all this is just change your oil often enough and use a good filter. Maybe to be safe I will just stick with synthetic since that's what's in it. Maybe I'll research the transition elsewhere

Actually, that's not so. If you have been to a Jiffy Lube recently (which I doubt) The manufacturer's reccomendations for oil change schedule are now followed. The OCS (Oil Change Schedule) empowers the customer to choose between the old 3/3 adage, the manufacturer's reccomendation, or select another mileage altogether. Whichever mileage is chosen will appear on the sticker.

Don't be too hard on us Jiffy Lubers, we aren't crooks or scammers... we simply inform the customer of what is recommended and leave the decisions to the customer.

One thing a lot of people leave out of this is the fact that a DIY oil change is also the time you get to hang out under the Jeep and bond with it, notice anything else going on. I myself enjoy my oil change time. Just me in the peaceful world of Jeepdom usually my dog makes an appearance and all is good. I also like to pretend that I cannot hear anything my wife is saying while I am under there ;)

Any where between 3000 and 6000 miles should work, even for conventional oil. Chrysler has generally upped its oil change interval to 6000 miles in recent years. I change mine at about 4500 miles using conventional oil.
State of California did oil change interval tests a few years back using Fram Extended Guard oil filters. Here's their results as to the 3000 mile oil change being overkill. Take a look at Pages 23 and 32 to 34.

I use mobile 1 and change it every 5000 miles, mostly cause it's a nice easy way to remember to change the oil. I only put on about 10k a year any way. I use dino oil in the wife's van and change it about the same but, she puts on a lot more miles than me. The oil in here van alway's looks nice. I;ve had older vehicles that I would change every 3k and it was like black paint. I think that had everything to do with me using a carb I think FI removed a lot of those issues....

Oil change interval also would depend on conditions. Dust/dirt/smog, length of time in the engine, miles driven. With that said, I've had two BMW cars, which all come with sythetic oil. My oil change intervals were between 14,000 and 17,000 miles. Never had an issue with the engine. With synthetic, 10,000 (Mobil1 anyway) should not be an issue at all. Look on Mobil web site. The extensive testing of Mobil 1 is impressive.

The buffering capacity (TBN) appeared to fail before other oil parameters, and was identified as the limiting factor for extending drain intervals in these vehicles. The previous DGS oil change interval was 6,000 miles. Based on TBN values, the analysis showed the oil to be acceptable up to approximately 10,000 miles.

A car is not a Jeep is not a car, but the underside of my hood and owner's manual suggests 7500 miles.

That's in 1988 for an Accord--not modern synthetic oil times.

Please re-read what I said. I said the 3K oil change interval gimmick was originally dreamed up by the quick change joints like JiffyLube to increase their revenues. You are simply saying that JiffyLube's policy no longer solely pushes that 3,000 mile interval like they did in years past. :)

I haven't been to a Jiffy Lube in some time. Every time I did go, the technicians would bring the "dirty" air filters to the waiting customers to convince them that the little bit of dirt they pointed to meant a perfectly good air filter needed to be changed. Every time.

Then when they failed to fill up my daughter's auto transmission on her Liberty after "changing" the fluid I decided no more.

They are much better than some other chains, however. I love Firestone's urgent recommendations for flushing out the fuel injectors and "cleaning" the brakes.
