Took the 88yj for run after a motor flush, fluid change and thermostat change. It ran great. Lugging hills, high way driving, no over heating issues. Once on highway going home jeep heated up just a little over 210 degrees which did not bother me. But jeep would stall or sputter every time i changed gear and stepped on gas pedal. Now once in town jeep cooled down and stopped stalling.



I did notice what appears black oil in fluid at top of radiator as I removed cap. Engine oil is new and I suspect oil from before that was in engine before I purchased the jeep. I suspect motor had issues before it was installed. Is there a way to tell if the jeep originally came with a different motor. Even motor size.



I just recently bought this used 88yj. Fluids were clean looking till I got it home. Lot of problems with this one, but have most of them sorted out now and upgrading. I think the fuel is trying to boil so looking on best place to route the fuel lines. Does anyone have a heat shield suggestion? I am even considering putting vents into hood to help.

Sounds like a blown head gasket. Do a compression test.
A leak down test will be even better. With pressure on the cylinder with the leak, you might see bubbles in the radiator with the radiator cap off.

The PO might have put some "head gasket stop leak" in the cooling system that you flushed out when you did your flush.
You did the right thing by doing the flush. Pulling the head and having a machine shop plane it back to true isn't too big a job. Have the shop boil the head, do a valve job and replace the valve seals while they have the head. Ask the shop about better valve seals than the plain "umbrella" style. They require a bit of machining but I believe they're worth the few extra dollars.

Drain some of the fluid and take a photo of it, while you do have symptoms indicating a head gasket issue, I learned recently this is not always the case.

  • On the left we have fluid from a radiator that has the color consistency of oil, with a slight sheen
  • On the right we have oil with antifreeze

LuckyMac is close. I looked at oil and it was rust But it floated. Looked the color or IRQ bottle on the right. Now new Fluid is not mixing with this rust and had it looked at by another who suggested stop leak of some sort.



If I pull head, is there any upgrades like rocker rollers you would suggest for trail riding and such.

On your fuel lines, they are routed like everyone else's. One thing you should do is turn your fuel filter so the port to the fuel tank return line is above the carb feed, and for the 3 bucks they cost you might want to replace it if you haven't already.

TY GIAL, i cant believe i missed that. Little things that make a diff. Considered putting some braided lines in. Want to get the drag and sway links off but have to install extended brake lines. Also the tie rod ends showing signs of wear........I am seeing a pattern here lol.
