I just purchased a '94 4.0 with 147K. I changed the oil and now, at idle, it sounds like the Jeep has a diesel engine. I've read many differing opinions on what it could be - either a lifter issue, a cracked exhaust manifold, or a normal sound for an old Jeep.

I did not hear the noise until after I changed the oil. I was in a rush and was forced to use a Fram filter from W-mart. I have heard that this could be the cause of the sound. My first thought is to change the oil and filter. Any recommendations on oil weight and filter brand for an 18 year old vehicle with 147K miles?

Everyone has there favorite brand but there are a lot of good options out there. I like mobile 1 but most brands out there make quality oil. I like purolator filters and they are sold at Walmart for less than frame.

You may have a faulty filter, I'd change that and fill up to just under full. I leave mine just under full. A little low is fine but over full is bad.

Just use a quality 10W30 and change it every 3K-4K miles. I had a little problem with noisy lifters and cleaned them by subbing a qt of ATF for 1 of oil and am sold on Wix filters. Solved the problem in 20 miles.
